ISLAMABAD – Senior parliamentarians has emphasized on the need of evolving rules and regulations for the safety of rights of children at national level to shape up a strong base of the country. They have also highlighted that Pakistan assured international community 3 decades ago to take certain measures for rights of children but we still lack legislations, rules, regulations and a national data so far. The parliamentarians commended the efforts of National Commission on Rights of Child in this regard that the commission rendered during the first tenure from March 2020 to Feb 2023. The parliamentarians include State Minister on Poverty Alleviation & Social Safety , Senator Faisal Karim Kundi, Chairman Defense Committee of the Senate of Pakistan, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Former Senator Farhat Ullah Babar and Senator Dr Mehr Tajj. They recommended to the government to extend the tenure of incumbent NCRC team under its Chairperson Afshan Tehseen Bajwa for her tireless and selfless struggle to safeguard the rights of the children in the country. <\/p>\n
The State Minister and the Parliamentarians were addressing to the media in a briefing hosted by N C R C in connection with “N C R C’s First Term March 2022 to Feb 2023 at a Glance”. Chariperson Afshan Tehseen Bajwa apprised the media about the challenges and responses in the children rights in Pakistan. She lamented that we have departments but they do not have laws and rules of work. We could not find a place even in Capital city to provide shelter to an orphan girl child. She said that a national level advisor to government of Pakistan should be appointed for children issues. She highlighted the necessity of securing the child rights as mandatory for G S P plus and Pakistan’s membership in international fora including UN. <\/p>\n
State Minister Faisal Karim Kundi confirmed the remarks of Chairperson Afshan that we have departments and commissions but they give no out put. We are youth nation but the state of our youth and children is not satisfactory. The Minister shared that at B I S P, the government is giving more than one hundred thousand scholarships to children. Our priority is to help 10 to 15 % of beneficiaries to stand on their own feet. Government is giving soft loans, jobs and vocational training to youth. Minister congratulated Chairperson and team of N C R C for their performance and termed it as an example for others. He assured all out support to N C R C in the future. extended that there is large number of vulnerable population in Pakistan including children. He said that all politicians should need to raise their voices and highlighted the main issues for the development of Pakistan. He added that NCRC should continue working with the same enthusiasm in the protection and promotion of child rights.<\/p>\n
Senator Syed Mushahid Hussain appreciated the work done by N C R C and further elaborated that children rights is a subject where all political parities should have consensus. He shared that we have completed a report on children in missing persons. He noted that digital census is an opportunity to prepare a national data of children that can be utilized to form the policies. <\/p>\n
Former Senator Farhat Ullah Babar said that N C R C performed very well and i can state two important achievements of the commission here. 1-N C R C solved the issue of students of a sect in Attock who were rusticated only because of the certain faith of their parents , 2- I complained to N C R C about two children tortured by police. The commission provided justice to the children. <\/p>\n
He said if want to secure our children , we will have to form a welfare state instead of security state. Media should ask government what you have done on your commitments to world community about rights of children. <\/p>\n
Senator Dr Mehr Tajj expressed hope that media would highlight the original issues of mothers and children rather highlighting the sensational news only. She recommended mothers to breastfeed their children to minimize the mortality rate in the country. She said substitute milk industry is a mafia that is too powerful to be controlled.
