\nIt is a welcome move that the Central Apex Committee (CAC), which held it meeting for the second time in the current month, has agreed to consider proposals for revision and implementation of the National Action Plan in its letter and spirit to raise morale of the people in the face of a fresh wave of a militancy.
\nA press release issued by the Prime Minister\u2019s Secretariat stated that the meeting took a comprehensive stock of the recent terrorist incidents, like the Peshawar police lines bombing, the Karachi police office attack and other incidents, which have posed a grave threat to the country\u2019s security apparatus. The participants paid accolades to the armed forces and other law enforcement agencies for their unprecedented valour to stamp out the threat.
\nAccording to reports, the meeting also deliberated on the role of the media that live coverage or misleading information during the course of security operations can benefit terrorists and their facilitators, and impact the operation and endanger the lives of law enforcers. Hence, the meeting recommended that appropriate procedures should be formulated for the media persons so that misleading information or spreading rumours and fear in emergency situations have been effectively prevented. As such, the press release adds that a focal person should be assigned the responsibility to provide facts to the media and public in an emergency situation.
\nFrankly, preventing terrorist attacks is a challenge for everyone, even for countries that are richly endowed with resources and skilled personnel. For most nations, realistically, the implementation of the long list of measures envisaged by the Security Council resolutions and the Global Strategy is going to be patchy at best. The task is daunting: securing borders, tightening financial controls, strengthening the role of the police, improving criminal justice systems, and providing mutual legal assistance to other countries trying to convict terrorists in their courts. This is a step-by-step process that might begin with Governments ratifying the relevant conventions and adopting stronger terrorism-related laws. However, they cannot stop there.
\nCountless men and women are on the beat every day all over the country, especially in former Fata and KP determined to prevent terrorism from rearing its ugly head again and other criminals from carrying out their nefarious designs.
