{"id":317510,"date":"2023-03-05T08:13:04","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T03:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=317510"},"modified":"2023-03-05T08:13:04","modified_gmt":"2023-03-05T03:13:04","slug":"lt-gen-retd-nazir-ahmed-appointed-nab-chairman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/lt-gen-retd-nazir-ahmed-appointed-nab-chairman\/","title":{"rendered":"Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed appointed NAB chairman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> ISLAMABAd<br \/>\nFormer Pakistan Army corps commander Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt has been appointed new chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).<br \/>\nThe notification of his appointment was issued by the PM Office after PM Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition leader in the National Assembly Raja Riaz held consultation and agreed on the name of the former general on Saturday.<br \/>\nThe development came days after the sudden resignation of Aftab Sultan as the NAB chairman only after seven months at the anti-graft watchdog\u2019s helm.<br \/>\nSultan cited \u201cinterference\u201d and \u201cpressure\u201d as the reasons for his departure, but did not elaborate on who was pressuring him.<br \/>\nThe Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) took the opportunity to say that the remarks were evidence that he was being coerced into filing corruption references against party chief Imran Khan.<br \/>\nFawad Chaudhry said that Sultan\u2019s resignation was a big step towards the collapse of a \u2018fascist system\u2019, saying he resigned over the \u2018interference\u2019 in his work. He also asked the recently-appointed 22 officers in Punjab to follow Sultan\u2019s footsteps and step aside, saying \u201cit is in the interest of both the country and the bureaucracy.\u201d<br \/>\nSurprising as it may seem, political commentators have said that despite the existence of the graft-buster \u2013 created in 1999 \u2013 corruption has only increased in the country in the past two decades.<br \/>\nThe lack of accountability and absence of meaningful accountability is a reason why democracy is still weak in Pakistan, they pointed out and added it was time to go for an across-the-board accountability process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAd Former Pakistan Army corps commander Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt has been appointed new chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
