NEW YORK, Apr 07 :The new Indian text books for children have either diluted or completely omitted some significant references, including to Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s opposition to Hindu nationalism, and the 2002 riots in Gujarat, where hundreds of Muslims were killed in days of indiscriminate violence at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the state\u2019s chief minister, according to a dispatch in a leading American newspaper.<\/p>\n
When Indian children began the school year this week, The New York Times said in a dispatch from New Delhi Friday that students in thousands of classrooms were this week issued the revised textbooks on history and politics that either watered down or purged key details from India\u2019s past that Prime Minister Modi\u2019s ruling party finds inconvenient to its Hindu nationalist vision for the country.<\/p>\n
This re-writing of history also took aim at the secular foundation of post-colonial India as well chapters on the history of the Mughals, the Muslim rulers who controlled much of India between the 16th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n
According to the Times, among the deleted passages from 12th-grade history and politics texts were:<\/p>\n
Gandhi\u2019s \u201csteadfast pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists so much that they made several attempts to assassinate\u201d him.<\/p>\n
Gandhi \u201cwas particularly disliked by those who wanted India to become a country for the Hindus, just as Pakistan was for Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cInstances, like in Gujarat, alert us to the dangers involved in using religious sentiments for political purposes. This poses a threat to democratic politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe alterations, which had been under discussion since last year before being formalized in the newly printed curriculum, follow other efforts by Mr. Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., to erase prominent Muslim marks on India\u2019s history and politics, including the frequent changing of street and city names from Muslim to Hindu,\u201d Times\u2019 correspondent Suhasini Raj wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe governing party\u2019s leaders have also tried to minimize the founding fathers\u2019 arguments for why India\u2019s diversity could survive only under a secular umbrella, co-opting the legacy of many secular leaders as they push to remake India into a Hindu-first nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith that divisive campaign, anti-Muslim hate speech has proliferated, holy sites have been aggressively contested and Hindu lynch mobs have killed Muslims on suspicion of slaughtering or even just transporting cows, which are considered holy by Hindus,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Political interference with education is not new to Indian democracy, it was pointed out. Successive federal and state governments have tried to leverage education to their advantage, whether to further an ideological agenda or for self-promotion.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Dinesh Prasad Saklani, director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education that oversees textbook content, defended the changes, claiming they had been made to reduce the load on children after the pandemic. Chapters were removed to avoid repetition, and important information was condensed, Saklani claimed, \u201cwhich will in no way affect a child\u2019s knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even the removal of single words, he said, like one that identified Nathuram Godse, Gandhi\u2019s assassin, as an upper-caste Hindu, was undertaken solely as part of that exercise.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou tell me, when content load is being reduced during times of such trauma, if the experts felt such-and-such thing should be removed, so it was. How is it such a big thing? I mean, are all Brahmins assassins?\u201d Saklani said, referring to Godse. Brahmins sit atop the caste hierarchy and are a large voting bloc for Modi\u2019s party.<\/p>\n
Saklani also claimed that the education organization had nothing to do with either the B.J.P. or the R.S.S., a powerful right-wing group that is the ideological fountainhead of Mr. Modi\u2019s political party. (A reference to a ban on the R.S.S. after Gandhi\u2019s assassination was among the deletions.)<\/p>\n
But critics argued that the textbook changes could give students a warped impression of India\u2019s history as Modi has linked himself to Gandhi\u2019s legacy even as other leaders of the ruling establishment have rejected Gandhi\u2019s principles, and as Godse has come to be revered by some groups, with one B.J.P. member of Parliament even calling him a patriot.<\/p>\n
\u201cGandhi\u2019s assassination is a founding moment of our history, and we are still suffering,\u201d Prabhu Mohapatra, a professor of modern Indian history at Delhi University, was quoted as saying. \u201cHow would we know the exact details and context of why Gandhi was killed if not first in school?\u201d<\/p>\n
By plucking out material from the textbooks, he said, \u201cthe historical narrative has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The change in curriculum was a matter of extensive debate in the Indian news media as the newly printed books became officially available this week.<\/p>\n
One newspaper, The Indian Express, which reported extensively on the soft rollout of the changes last year, was scathing in an editorial on Thursday.<\/p>\n
