According to the Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) Press Freedom Index 2021, Pakistan ranks 145th out of 180 countries, highlighting the dire situation of press freedom in the country. Journalists face numerous threats, including physical violence, intimidation and censorship.
\nThe problem is not just limited to Pakistan; globally, journalists face tremendous risks while reporting the truth. From being jailed and tortured to being murdered, journalists often risk their lives to bring us the truth. Unfortunately, their work is often undermined by powerful interests that seek to control the narrative.
\nZeroing in on what has been characterized as \u201can extreme press\u201d during the recent annual dinner of White House Correspondents\u2019 Association, President Joe Biden has taken a jab at the news outlets, saying they used \u201clies told for profit and power\u201d to stir up hatred.
\nThe rise of social media has had a profound impact on our society, connecting people across the globe and facilitating the spread of information at an unprecedented rate. However, this proliferation of information has also had a downside: it has become increasingly difficult to discern the truth from fiction.
\nOne of the main reasons for this is the lack of regulation on social media platforms. Unlike traditional media outlets, social media companies are not subject to the same standards and regulations that govern the accuracy and impartiality of news reporting. This means that anyone can post anything on social media, regardless of whether it is true or not. The consequences of blurring of the truth either on the traditional media or the social media can be far-reaching.
