Coordinator to Prime Minister on Economy and Energy Bilal Azhar Kayani on Wednesday categorically said that the government had no plan to impose additional tax on income of agriculture sector.<\/p>\n
Addressing a news conference here, he said it was unfortunate that those who pushed the country to the verge of default were now attempting to dent the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.<\/p>\n
He expressed firm resolve that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would continue to take the country\u2019s journey towards economic stability and progress forward after coming into power in the next general elections.<\/p>\n
He mentioned that the government had successfully entered into a nine-month Stand-By-Agreement (SBA) with IMF, which was the result of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif\u2019s dedicated efforts that received overwhelming support from the entire nation.<\/p>\n
One significant indicator of the country\u2019s economic growth was observed on July 3 when the Pakistan stock exchange experienced a remarkable increase of 2446 points, with the index surpassing the 45,000 mark. This positive development was well-received by the business and trading communities, signifying their confidence in the government\u2019s economic policies, he added.<\/p>\n
Kayani highlighted that Fitch, a renowned credit rating agency, also improved Pakistan\u2019s rating from minus \u2019CCC \u2018 to \u2018+CCC\u2019 further bolstering the nation\u2019s economic position.<\/p>\n
Acknowledging the concerns surrounding loans acquired from the IMF, the Prime Minister himself acknowledged the necessity of such measures for Pakistan\u2019s economic well-being. As a result, the country\u2019s foreign reserves increased, and exchange rate stability has been achieved, effectively eliminating the threats of default.<\/p>\n
In addition to the assistance of around $4.2 billion from the IMF, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China also recently rolled over a loan of $600 million.<\/p>\n
Bilal Azhar emphasized that certain elements within the nation had attempted to undermine the national economy by engaging in petty politics. However, these destructive seeds have been uprooted, and those who once desired Pakistan to default are now opposing the IMF program, perplexed by the country\u2019s resilience, he added.<\/p>\n
He said despite the challenging decisions, the government has ensured that the socially vulnerable classes receive financial assistance through the social protection program.
\nReconstruction and development efforts are also underway in areas affected by devastating floods.<\/p>\n
He denounced the spread of misinformation about the IMF program, particularly false claims of additional taxes.
\nHe clarified that all changes have been incorporated within the budget, reducing expenditures by 85 billion rupees while increasing the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) budget.<\/p>\n
Addressing the confusion regarding taxation on agriculture, he stated that no new taxes had been imposed on the agricultural sector.
\nHe emphasized the government\u2019s commitment to continuing the journey of economic stability while implementing a series of reforms.<\/p>\n
The decision to adopt the IMF program was driven by necessity, as defaulting would have severely impacted the common people, especially those belonging to economically weaker sections of society, he expressed.
\nBilal pointed out the situation in Sri Lanka, where extended power outages, fuel shortages, and long queues for essential resources occurred. He attributed these challenges to vested interests that deliberately tried to cripple the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
He mentioned a conversation between Shaukat Tarin, the former Finance Minister, and the former Punjab Finance Minister, which served as evidence of this subversive agenda.
\nIn terms of inflation, he highlighted a decrease in the inflation rate during June and assured further reductions in the coming days.<\/p>\n
The same vested class responsible for inflation had chosen to prioritize their interests over the state, tarnishing the country\u2019s image.
\nPML-N, being the party that played a significant role in establishing Pakistan, made the difficult decision to prioritize the state and its people.<\/p>\n
Promising a surge in economic activities and increased employment opportunities, Bilal Azhar criticized vested groups for intentionally sabotaging the IMF agreement to create difficulties for the newly elected government and push Pakistan towards default.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, he reminded that PML-N had previously successfully completed an IMF program. In 2018, the inflation rate stood at 3.8%, with food and beverage prices experiencing a 2.3% increase.
\nEconomic stability was achieved during that period, and policies were being consistently implemented.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the accomplishments during PML-N\u2019s tenure, he mentioned the successful launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) between 2013 and 2018, the addition of 12,000 megawatts of electricity, and the eradication of load shedding.<\/p>\n
Operations against terrorism were also successful during that time.
\nExpressing disappointment with the individual who derailed the path of sustainable economic growth, Kayani stressed that significant economic progress in the last three decades occurred under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.<\/p>\n
Despite economic challenges, his administration consistently made decisions that propelled the nation forward with effective management and governance. The country\u2019s defense was strengthened through nuclear capabilities.<\/p>\n
After a temporary setback from 2018 to 2022, the government is now committed to comprehensive measures aimed at increasing investment special attention is being given to sectors such as Information Technology and agriculture to boost revenues.<\/p>\n
