{"id":345041,"date":"2023-07-24T14:01:27","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T09:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=345041"},"modified":"2023-07-24T14:01:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T09:01:27","slug":"killing-of-veteran-wfp-staff-member-in-yemen-an-unacceptable-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/killing-of-veteran-wfp-staff-member-in-yemen-an-unacceptable-tragedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Killing of veteran WFP staff member in Yemen \u2018an unacceptable tragedy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Jul 24 : The top UN humanitarian official in Yemen on Saturday called for justice in the wake of the recent attack against World Food Programme (WFP) staff that left one person dead and another injured.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator David Gressly said he was \u201cshocked and deeply saddened by the appalling attack\u201d, which occurred on Friday when unknown gunmen fired on the aid workers in the town of Turbah, located in Taiz governorate in southwestern Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Gressley said the entire UN family and humanitarian partners in the country are grieving the loss of Moayad Hameidi, a Jordanian national and dedicated humanitarian, who died in hospital shortly after the attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Hameidi\u2019s death is indeed an unacceptable tragedy. I call on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. Humanitarian workers should never be a target,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hameidi was a veteran WFP staff member, having worked for the UN agency for 18 years, including on a previous posting in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>He had only recently returned to the country to assume a new job as the head of WFP\u2019s office in Taiz.<\/p>\n<p>The Resident Coordinator conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to Hameidi\u2019s family and friends and wished a speedy recovery to the injured staff member.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Jul 24 : The top UN humanitarian official in Yemen on Saturday called for justice in the wake of the recent attack against World Food Programme (WFP) staff that left one person dead and another injured.
