\n\u2014 Pakistan\u2019s Ambassador to the United States Masood Khan has decorated GRAMMY award winner Urooj Aftab with prestigious President\u2019s Pride of Performance award during a ceremony held in connection with Independence Day in Washington DC.
\nUrooj Aftab is an internationally recognized Pakistani American vocalist, music composer and producer in the United States Ms. Aftab, 38, was the first Pakistani woman to ever win a |GRAMMY in 2022, a major annual American entertainment award. She sang Hafeez Hoshiarpuri\u2019s Ghazal , \u201cMohabbat Karne Wale Kam Na Honge\u2026\u201d , in the Best Global Performance category.
\nLauding her achievement especially in bringing the people of Pakistan and US closer to each other with the power of music, Ambassador Masood Khan said that that diplomacy and interstate relations were all about perceptions and Urooj Aftab has helped changing the perceptions about Pakistan.
\n\u201cIn recognition of her outstanding contribution in promoting Pakistani music tradition in the United States and across the globe, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has conferred on Ms. Urooj Aftab the President\u2019s Pride of performance award,\u201d said the citation read at an investiture held on the occasion of Pakistan\u2019s Independence Day.
\nAmbassador Masood Khan underscored her role in bringing the people of two countries closer to each other through the power of music, saying that diplomacy and interstate relations were all about perceptions and Ms. Aftab has helped change the perception of Pakistan.
\n\u201cPakistanis loves music,\u201d the Ambassador said. Thanking the Ambassador and government of Pakistan for the award, Urooj Aftab said that it was a good moment to acknowledge that literature, poetry and music has been an integral part of our identity as Pakistanis.
\nTerming the conferment of award upon her as a matter of pride and a source of inspiration for other female artists of the country, she said that it was a bright day for Pakistani female musicians to have received the award.
\nOn the occasion, Ms. Aftab also thanked and paid tribute to legendary female Pakistani singers, from Mukhtar Begum to Abida Parveen. \u201cI don\u2019t think I would be standing here if it wasn\u2019t for them,\u201d she said.
