{"id":352807,"date":"2023-08-31T00:46:25","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T19:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=352807"},"modified":"2023-08-31T00:46:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T19:46:25","slug":"iran-bans-weightlifter-for-life-over-handshake-with-israeli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/iran-bans-weightlifter-for-life-over-handshake-with-israeli\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran bans weightlifter for life over handshake with Israeli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> TEHRAN<br \/>\nAn Iranian weightlifter has been given a lifetime ban by authorities in the Islamic republic after shaking hands with an Israeli competitor at an event in Poland, state media reported.<br \/>\nMostafa Rajaei, aged in his 40s, shook hands with Israeli weightlifter Maksim Svirsky on Saturday after they both stood on the podium at a World Masters championship in Wieliczka, Poland.<br \/>\n\u201cThe weightlifting federation bans athlete Mostafa Rajaei for life from entering all sports facilities in the country and dismisses the head of the delegation for the competition, Hamid Salehinia,\u201d the body announced in a statement cited by state news agency IRNA.<br \/>\nIran does not recognize Israel, its sworn enemy, and prohibits all contact between Iranian and Israeli athletes.<br \/>\nAccording to the IRNA report, Rajaei \u201ccrossed the red lines of the Islamic republic\u201d at the event where the Iranian delegation had been \u201csent with the support of the federation.\u201d<br \/>\nRajaei is a former member of the Iranian national team and represented his country at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2015 in Thailand.<br \/>\nIn 2021, Iran\u2019s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged athletes \u201cnot to shake hands with a representative of the (Israeli) criminal regime to obtain a medal.\u201d<br \/>\nFor years, Iranian athletes have managed to avoid meeting Israelis in competitions, often by getting disqualified or providing medical certificates testifying that they were unwell.<br \/>\nYoung chess prodigy Alireza Firouzja left Iran after the sport\u2019s federation banned him from playing in the 2019 world championship for fear he would face an Israeli player.
