NEW YORK
\nThe United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will hold a meeting later this month to review the implementation of its last year\u2019s resolution regarding flood devastation in Pakistan.
\nIn a statement, the spokesperson for the president of 78th session of the 193-member assembly, Monica Grayley said the meeting is aimed at calling on the world community to increase aid and keep up the political will to support Pakistan\u2019s long-term recovery efforts.
\nThe Spokesperson said that the meeting will take place on in the Trusteeship Council Chamber on September 27. The Assembly\u2019s Oct 7, 2022, resolution also urged the U.N. to step up efforts to \u201csensitize the international community\u201d to Pakistan\u2019s needs and \u201cmobilize effective, immediate and adequate international support and assistance.\u201d
\nUN officials are expected to update the Assembly on the actions taken on the goal set by the resolution, entitled: \u2018Solidarity with and support for the Government and people of Pakistan and strengthening of emergency relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention in the wake of the recent devastating flood.\u201d
\nRecord-breaking floods in Pakistan affected over 33 million people and killed 1,700 or more. Nearly 8 million people were displaced, with many still living in tents and makeshift homes.
\nU.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who saw some of the damage for himself during a visit in the wake of August floods, reminded the assembly of the losses: more than 2 million homes damaged or destroyed, and crops and livestock were ravaged.
\nHe said at that time the disaster could thrust more than 15 million people into poverty. The 78th session of the UN General Assembly was declared open last Tuesday by new General Assembly President Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
