\nA special court on Wednesday extended the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and party\u2019s Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi\u2019s judicial remand till September 26 in the cipher case.
\nSpecial Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain, who adjudicated the case at the Attock District Jail under the Official Secrets Act 2023 has extended the judicial remand of Imran Khan in the missing cipher case, a classified state document.
\nA private television reported that a hearing of the case took place at the Attock Jail following approval by the Law Ministry amid security concerns expressed by the Interior Ministry. The PTI Chairman Imran Khan was sent to jail on August 5 following his conviction in the Toshakhana case. On August 29, the IHC had suspended his sentence.
\nHowever, a special court had directed Attock jail authorities to keep him in \u201cjudicial lockup\u201d in connection with the cipher case. On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) reserved its verdict on a petition filed by the PTI chairman challenging the law ministry\u2019s decision to conduct the trial in the cipher case at Attock jail.
\nIHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq reserved the verdict on the PTI chairman\u2019s plea after hearing the arguments. The court had sought an explanation from the respondents on the notice. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was registered on the complaint of the Home Secretary.
\nFormer prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were nominated in the case whereas names of former principal secretary Azam Khan and former planning minister Asad Umar were also mentioned. According to the report, action also will be taken against Azam Khan and Asad Umar after the authorities reached the conclusion that they were also involved in misusing the classified documents.
\nThe FIR stated that the former prime minister and foreign minister distorted the facts of the diplomatic cipher. \u201cA conspiracy was launched to misuse the contents of the cipher to fulfill nefarious purposes\u201d, it added. It further stated that former premier and top diplomat endangered the state interests. The report claimed that the former prime minister asked Azam Khan \u2013 the then principal secretary \u2013 to \u201cmanipulate the contents of cipher\u201d. \u201cThe former premier deliberately kept the copy of the diplomatic cipher, which was sent to the PM office\u201d, it added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
