WASHINGTON
\nMatthew Miller, the spokesperson for the United States Department of State, reiterated that the US does not support any kind of regime change.
\nIn his media briefing in Washington, Matthew Miller has once again rejected the allegations of regime change in Pakistan. He said the US government has responded to the claims many times as it did not support any regime change.
\nIn this regard, he pointed out that the United States had repeatedly rejected allegations about regime change in Pakistan.
\n\u201cWe support free and fair elections and do not take a position one way or another,\u201d the spokesperson said.
\n\u201cAnd we see Pakistan as a valued partner of the United States with whom we work on a number of issues. \u201cThat hasn\u2019t changed and it will not change,\u201d Miller added.
\nAnswering a question regarding a recent protest rally by Pakistani-Americans outside the White House, Miller said that the U.S. Constitution allows the people living here to freely express themselves.
\nAbout the murder of a Sikh leader in Canada, the spokesperson said that the U.S. has consistently engaged with the Indian Government on this question and have urged New Delhi to cooperate with the Canadian investigation.
\nBut a State Department statement issued after the meeting between the visiting Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made no mention about the top US diplomat having raised the issue, although Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had earlier said that Blinken would do so.
\nThe Sikh leader, Hardeep Singh Niggar, was shot dead outside a Gurdawara on June 18 in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. Nijjar supported a Sikh homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state and was designated by India as a \u201cterrorist\u201d in July 2020.
\nTensions flared up after Canada said on Sept 18 that it was investigating \u201ccredible allegations\u201d linking the Indian state with the murder, but India dismissed those allegations as \u201cabsurd\u201d.
\nAsked about the allegations at a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York Tuesday afternoon, Jaishankar detailed India\u2019s response in diplomatic engagements.
\n\u201cOne, we told the Canadians that this [trans-border killings] is not the government of India\u2019s policy,\u201d he said. \u201cTwo, we told the Canadians saying that look, if you have something specific, if you have something relevant, you know, let us know \u2013 we are open to looking at it.\u201d
