An Illinois man was charged with hate crimes for stabbing a 6-year-old Muslim boy to death and wounding his mother in an attack that targeted them for their religion and as a response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, officials and Muslim rights activists said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The boy was stabbed 26 times with a military-style knife with a 7-inch (18-cm) serrated blade, the Will County Sheriff\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The 32-year-old woman had multiple stab wounds and is expected to survive the attack that occurred on Saturday in Plainfield Township, about 64 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of Chicago.<\/p>\n
US President Joe Biden said the boy\u2019s family were Palestinian Muslims who \u201ccame to America seeking what we all seek \u2014 a refuge to live, learn, and pray in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis horrific act of hate has no place in America,\u201d Biden said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Since the Oct 7 Hamas offensive, Israel has responded with a complete blockade and fierce bombardment of the Gaza strip, which Tel Aviv says is to eliminate the group. Leaders in the West have been supportive of Israeli military action, and some, like French President Emmanuel Macron, have conflated Hamas\u2019 actions with the Gazans.<\/p>\n
The suspect, Joseph Czuba, 71, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of hate crime and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDetectives were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis,\u201d the Will County Sheriff\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\nReuters could not identify an attorney for Czuba. He was in jail awaiting his initial court appearance, the office said.<\/p>\n
Although Czuba did not make any statements to detectives, as is his constitutional right, police said they determined the charges through interviews and evidence.<\/p>\n
When police arrived at the scene, they said they found Czuba sitting on the ground outside the home with a cut to his forehead. The victims were in a bedroom.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the woman managed to call 911 as she fought off the landlord, named by the sheriff\u2019s office as Czuba.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeputies located two victims inside the residence in a bedroom. Both victims had multiple stab wounds to their chest, torso, and upper extremities,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n
A serrated military-style knife with a seven-inch blade was pulled from the boy\u2019s abdomen during the autopsy, the statement said.<\/p>\n
When police arrived they found Czuba sitting on the ground near the driveway of the residence with a laceration on his forehead. He was taken to hospital for treatment before being charged with murder, attempted murder, and two counts of hate crimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe knocked on the door and attempted to choke her, and said, \u2018you Muslims\u2019 must die,\u201d Ahmed Rehab, head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Chicago office, told reporters, citing text messages sent by the woman to the murdered boy\u2019s father from her hospital bed.<\/p>\n
The CAIR identified the boy as Wadea Al-Fayoume and said the woman, Hanaan Shahin, was his mother.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Islamophobic rhetoric and anti-Palestinian racism being spread by politicians, media outlets, and social media platforms must stop,\u201d CAIR said on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n
Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar called the crime \u201cunspeakable\u201d and said she prayed \u201clove can prevail in these times of so much hate\u201d.<\/p>\n
FBI Director Christopher Wray warned the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference to stay vigilant \u201cin this heightened environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no question we\u2019re seeing an increase in reported threats, and we\u2019ve got to be on the lookout, especially for lone actors who may take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own,\u201d Wray told the conference in San Diego on Saturday, according to the FBI website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
