Deposed prime minister and proclaimed offender Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on Saturday afternoon after spending four years in self-imposed exile for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
Upon disembarking, he proceeded to the airport\u2019s VIP lounge alongside party leader Ishaq Dar, to sign legal documents and complete biometric formalities. Nawaz is expected to fly to Lahore on the same plane he arrived in.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe process to sign and verify legal documents has been completed,\u201d Dar posted on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n
The 73-year-old veteran politician will lead a rally in his eastern hometown of Lahore. His chartered plane arrived in Islamabad with more than 150 people from his party and media organisations, the party and sources said.<\/p>\n
Rallies from various regions of the country were pouring into Lahore ahead of his arrival, a party spokesperson said. Heavy police contingents were deployed to guard the rally\u2019s venue, said police officer Ali Nasir Rizvi.<\/p>\n
Before boarding his flight, Nawaz said he was \u201chappy to return\u201d. He is likely to face a host of legal challenges before embarking on his election campaign to rev up his party\u2019s prospects in the lead-up to elections due in Jan next year.<\/p>\n
Dar said Nawaz would arrive at Minar-i-Pakistan at 5pm today on schedule to address the gathering.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn a media channel, there is news that Mian Nawaz Sharif will first go to Jati Umra and will later go to Minar-i-Pakistan at 7pm. This news is not true,\u201d he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n
Nawaz\u2019s party is rallying its base, urging supporters to converge on Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore from around the country to greet their leader and showcase the undiminished popularity of the party, which has been declared \u2018irrelevant\u2019 by its rivals.<\/p>\n
Observers say the reason Nawaz is arriving in Islamabad instead of Lahore is that his touchdown in the capital was necessary to make bail, earlier granted by the Islamabad High Court on Oct 19.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going back to Pakistan after four years today,\u201d Nawaz said today while speaking to the media at Dubai Airport. \u201cWhen I was leaving Pakistan and going abroad I had no feeling of happiness but today I am happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ousted premier said he wished the country was in a better state than it was in 2017.<\/p>\n
\u201cI get very worried and disappointed seeing the situation in the country. The country that had to move forward is going backward now economically and unity-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n
Terming the situation as \u201cworrisome\u201d, Nawaz said there was still hope and \u201cwe should not let it slip from our hands as we are capable of fixing it because we spoilt it ourselves\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said the country had to get back on its feet as \u201cnobody else will lift us up\u201d.<\/p>\n
