\nProtesters marched Sunday through Morocco\u2019s capital in support of Palestinians, calling for an end to the Israeli aggression, which has killed thousands in the Gaza Strip.
\nThe crowd in Rabat of about 10,000 people denounced what protest leaders called a \u201cwar of extermination\u201d as well as the normalisation of relations between Morocco and Israel.
\nThe protesters were called to the streets by a disparate group of organisations backing the Palestinian cause, including left-wingers and members of the Islamist Justice and Charity movement.
\nThey marched along Mohammed V Avenue in the heart of the city, beneath banners declaring \u201cstop the war of extermination in Gaza, stop normalisation\u201d.
\nIn 2020, Morocco joined a number of Arab countries in establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords.
\nAs part of the deal, Rabat received US recognition for its claim to sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
\nOn Mohammed V avenue, numerous protesters wielded banners condemning the \u201cdestruction of hospitals\u201d in Gaza and Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
\nPosters called for \u201cfree Palestine\u201d and to \u201csave Gaza\u201d. The crowd chanted slogans lauding the \u201cresistance of the Palestinian people\u201d and directed particular fury at the United States for its support of Israel\u2019s war against Hamas.
\n\u201cWhen you bomb massively without distinction between military targets and civilians, including babies \u2014 that is a genocide. We must call a spade a spade,\u201d said Jihane, a 27-year-old protester.In Rabat, Hachimi Damni, a 62-year-old protester, said he had come to express his opposition to the bombing in Gaza and normalisation with Israel.
\nPublic expressions of opposition to the Abraham Accords had been rare before the war in Gaza.
