\nIsrael has said its operations against the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in southern Gaza will soon enter a less intensive phase after the Gaza health ministry reported the death toll in the territory had surpassed 24,000.
\nMore than 100 days into the war, the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under intense international pressure to end the fighting as civilian deaths soar and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens.
\nAt the same time, deadly violence in the occupied West Bank, exchanges of fire over Israel\u2019s border with Lebanon, and strikes by US forces on Yemen\u2019s Houthi fighters acting in solidarity with Hamas have all raised fears of an escalation beyond the Gaza Strip.
\nUN chief Antonio Guterres on Monday reiterated calls for a stop in the combat, saying: \u201cWe need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to ensure sufficient aid gets to where it is needed, to facilitate the release of the hostages, to tamp down the flames of wider war — because the longer the conflict in Gaza continues, the greater the risk of escalation and miscalculation.\u201d As of Monday evening, at least 24,100 Palestinians, around 70 percent of them women, young children and adolescents, had been killed in the Gaza Strip in Israel\u2019s bombardment and ground offensive, according to the government\u2019s health ministry — a figure that would represent roughly one percent of the territory\u2019s population.
\nThe Palestinian press office said Tuesday morning that Israeli strikes had killed another 78 people overnight.
\nThe Israeli military also announced early Tuesday the death of one more soldier in Gaza, bringing the total number killed since its ground invasion began to 189.
\nWith the army having shifted its focus from Gaza\u2019s devastated north to the southern cities of Khan Yunis and Rafah in recent weeks, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told a news conference on Monday that intense operations would soon be winding down there as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe made it clear that the intensive manoeuvring stage would last for approximately three months,\u201d Gallant told a news conference, adding that stage was already being reached in the northern Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn southern Gaza we will reach this achievement and it will end soon, and in both places, the moment will come when we will move to the next phase,\u201d he said, without specifying a time frame.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s army confirmed that one of its four divisions operating in the territory completed its withdrawal on Monday.
\nHowever, Israeli officials, including Netanyahu over the weekend, have repeatedly warned the fighting in Gaza will go on for months.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead to Gaza\u2019s eventual post-war administration, Gallant said: \u201cPalestinians live in Gaza and therefore Palestinians will govern it in the future. The future Gaza government must grow out of the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n
The UN says the war has displaced roughly 85 percent of Gaza\u2019s population, many of whom have been forced to crowd into shelters and struggle to get food, water, fuel and medical care.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were displaced with the people who fled, first to schools, then to Deir al-Balah,\u201d said Umm Jihad, who had returned to visit her home in central Gaza\u2019s Al-Bureij on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no life at all, there\u2019s no house, and there\u2019s nothing left,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s depressing and dismal, there is only debris — that\u2019s Al-Bureij.\u201d<\/p>\n
AFPTV footage showed smoke billowing on Monday over Al-Bureij and Khan Yunis, southern Gaza\u2019s main city, and explosions could be heard from nearby Rafah, on the territory\u2019s southern border with Egypt.<\/p>\n
As temperatures plunge, families living in makeshift tents in Rafah have resorted to burning plastic to ward off the chill, despite the noxious fumes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt night, I feel like we\u2019re going to die from the cold,\u201d said Haneen Adwan, 31, a mother of six children who was forced to flee from central Gaza\u2019s Nuseirat refugee camp.<\/p>\n
The Israeli public, meanwhile, has kept up intense pressure on the government to secure the return of the captives seized by Hamas on October 7.<\/p>\n
Hamas\u2019s armed wing released a video showing a woman hostage, revealing that two men she was held with had been killed in captivity by Israeli bombardment<\/p>\n
In a statement released with the video, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades blamed \u201cthe Zionist army\u2019s bombing\u201d for the deaths of the captives.<\/p>\n
Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari rejected the cause of death as a \u201clie\u201d, but added: \u201cWe know that we hit targets near the location where they were held\u201d, saying an investigation was underway.<\/p>\n
Hagit Chen, the mother of one of the hostages, said at an event in Berlin that it was \u201chard to live, to sleep, to breathe, to eat\u201d because she had heard nothing from her son Itay, 19.<\/p>\n
Violence involving regional allies of Hamas has surged since the war began.<\/p>\n
Yemen\u2019s Houthi fighters, who say they act in solidarity with Gaza, claimed a missile strike on a US-owned cargo ship on Monday, just days after the United States and Britain bombed scores of targets inside the country in response to repeated attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n
