\nUEFA\u2019s Chief of Football Zvonimir Boban has quit European soccer\u2019s governing body in protest against its president Aleksandar Ceferin.
\nThe development comes after Ceferin looks to make changes in statutes that would allow him to extend his term in office.
\nBoban, a former AC Milan midfielder and captain of Croatia, penned an open letter, published by Croatian website Telesport, to reveal his decision.
\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry and I\u2019m sad, but I\u2019m leaving UEFA,\u201d Boban said in the letter.
\nBoban added that Ceferin\u2019s support for a move to change UEFA\u2019s rules at its next Congress on February 8 was the reason behind his exit. The changes would pave Ceferin\u2019s path to stand for re-election when his current four-year term finishes in 2027.
\nUEFA\u2019s current rules prevent the president and members of the Executive Committee from running for office more than three times, or staying in their posts for more than 12 years.
\n\u201cParadoxically, it was Ceferin who proposed and launched the package of reforms in 2017 that were supposed to protect UEFA and European football,\u201d Boban said.
\n\u201cHis departure from these values and changes in the main reforms are difficult to understand, especially in this delicate football time.
\n\u201cIf I were to accept such a difficult and wrong decision and turn my head, I would be going against the principles and general values in which I deeply believe.
\n\u201cI am not playing any hero, and I know very well that many are of the same opinion \u2014 perhaps naive, but certainly correct.\u201d
