\nThe Kremlin said on Thursday that Joe Biden had debased the United States by calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a \u201ccrazy SOB\u201d, casting the US president\u2019s remark as part of a failed \u201cHollywood cowboy\u201d act.
\nThe US president made the \u201ccrazy SOB\u201d remark as part of a sentence about threats to the world\u2013including \u201cthat guy Putin and others\u201d, the risk of nuclear conflict and the existential threat to humanity from climate change.
\n\u201cThe use of such language against the head of another state by the president of the United States is unlikely to infringe on our president, President Putin,\u201d Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters. \u201cBut it debases those who use such vocabulary.\u201d
\nPeskov said the remark was \u201cprobably some kind of attempt to look like a Hollywood cowboy. But honestly I don\u2019t think it\u2019s possible.\u201d
\n\u201cHas Mr Putin ever used one crude word to address you? This has never happened. Therefore, I think that such vocabulary debases America itself,\u201d Peskov said, adding that such language was a disgrace for the United States.
\nOthers were less restrained.
\nPutin ally Dmitry Medvedev, who served as president from 2008-2012, said the existential threat to the world came from \u201cuseless old geezers, like Biden himself\u201d. Medvedev said Biden was \u201csenile\u201d and \u201cready to start a war with Russia\u201d.
\nRussian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the next time Biden used the phrase \u201ccrazy son of a bitch\u201d he should \u201ctry to remember that Americans associate it best with his own offspring, Hunter Biden.\u201d
\nRussian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets said \u201cBiden insulted Putin\u201d while Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser, said the Biden remark shows that the West was intensifying its attempt to demonise Putin ahead of the March election.
\nRelations in crisis
\nThe war in Ukraine, the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and US assertions that Russia plans to put a nuclear weapon in space have led to the biggest crisis in relations between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
\nTop Russian and US diplomats say they do not remember a time when relations between the world\u2019s two biggest nuclear powers were worse, including during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
\nBiden said last week after prison officers announced Navalny\u2019s death in a Russian penal colony that it was \u201ca consequence of something that Putin and his thugs did.\u201d Navalny had previously accused Putin of trying to kill him, an allegation the Kremlin denied.
\nRussian officials say the West rushed to blame Putin without waiting for evidence. The Kremlin says the West\u2019s reaction to Navalny\u2019s death is unacceptable and unjustified.
\nBiden said in a speech in Warsaw in 2022 that Putin \u201ccannot remain in power\u201d. The White House played down the remark, while hardliners in Russia saw it as evidence that the US wanted to topple Putin.
