Karachi: Sexual and cyber harassment on-campus and\noff-campus is as damaging to women as physical violence and abuse experienced, United\nNations Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Phumzile\nMlambo-Ngcuka said to students and faculty members of SZABIST, the country\u2019s\nleading technological university as she called for their commitment to speak\nout for sexual harassment at campuses to end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is a new driver of potential harmful gender inequality\nas more and more universities and students gain internet access. Sexual harassment\nis intolerable, and we are witnessing that students are providing inspirational\nleadership in combatting it. Now is the time for stronger action and we have to\nstart from education, said the Executive Director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be disconnected from technology in the 21st century, is\nlike having your freedom disrupted: your right to learn, your right to work,\nyour right to meet people, your freedom of speech. We need to constantly make\nthe point about the advantages of education and technology for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Nasreen Haque, Vice President of SZABIST, Karachi Campus,\nsaid,We need to join hands and exercise the power of solidarity to promote and\ncoordinate efforts to advance the full realization of women\u2019s rights, to tell\nthem how valuable and precious they are; that they are to be treated with\ndignity and respect; that they should disregard anyone who demeans or devalues\nthem. On behalf of SZABIST, I propose a Consortium of Chairs of anti-sexual\nharassment committees of universities of Karachi to share their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year, the UN\u2019s theme for International Day for the\nElimination of Violence against Women is \u201cOrange the World: #HearMeToo\u201d. As the\n#MeToo and #TimesUp movement picks up in Pakistan, more cases are being\nreported, making offenders accountable, it is also exposing the prevalence of\nviolence from celebrities to work places including government offices, and to\neducational institutions. #HearMeToo aims to support all those whose voices are\nstill not yet being heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pakistan\u2019s anti-sexual harassment laws recognizes that\nsexual harassment is a form of discrimination against women and a human rights\nviolation, that occurs in many arenas of life, including schools and\nuniversities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In any University, sexual assault and sexual harassment is\nunacceptable. The safety and wellbeing of students and staff who disclose or\nreport sexual assault or sexual harassment needs to be the priority of\nUniversities and at the centre of the University response. Giving the vote of\nthanks, Country Representative UN Women Pakistan Jamshed Kazi said survivors of\nharassment and violence have much more to lose than gain. We need to have\nrobust complaint handling mechanisms at universities. And if we start\nredressing such complaints in an effective manner, students would be confident\nto reach out to sexual harassment committees at universities with complaints. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
