Garamchishma road blocked for traffic due to heavy snowfall
\nCHITRAL
\nSnowfall is continue in Chitral and suburbs areas since last night. Two to three inches of snow has fallen in Chitral city, while two feet of snow has been recorded on Loweri Tunnel Road. Garam Chashma road has been closed for all kinds of vehicular traffic due to heavy snowfall as a result 40 thousand people have been retrain and disconnected from other parts of Chitral.
\nAfter two days of continuous rain, snowfall has been started in Upper and Lower Chitral districts since last night. Due to snowfall, the intensity of cold has increased. There is no rush in the markets while the traffic on the roads is very less.
\nThe district administration has warned the public to avoid unnecessary travel to be saved from any inconvenience or misshape due to avalanches or landsliding.
\nSnowfall is also continuing in the three areas of Kailash Valley, Bomburit, Barir, Rambur and Shekhanandeh, where two feet of snow has been fallen. More than two feet of snow has fallen in Midgalshit and the road has also been damaged by avalanches at many places.
\nThe people of Chitral burn firewood to protect themselves from the cold during snowfall, which causing increases the burden on the forests. Chitral has received snowfall for the second time in this season after a long drought, but local elders say that in March this is the first snowfall in 15 years.
\nAccording to local experts, when snow fall in November, December or January, it is long-lasting and freezes to a large extent, which is a major reservoir of water in summer, but the snow melts quickly during this season.
\nWhile the people are happy with the recent snowfall, on the other hand, the peasants and farmers are also very hopeful that it will irrigate their fields in those areas where canal water is not available and people used to irrigate their crops with rain or snow water.
\nThe elders of Garam Chashma say that the National Highway Authority has not yet started snow removing work from the road due to which the people of the entire valley are stranded and they are deprived of daily necessities, as well as fresh vegetables and chicken, meat. etc. are also can not be supplied in this valley.
\nChildren are very happy during snowfall and they enjoy making snowballs and throwing them at each other. As people in Chitral burn fire wood for cooking purposes and keeping themselves warm, it is causing heavy burden on the forests and indiscriminate deforestation also has a negative impact on the environment due to climate change where other areas are affected.
\nCold regions like Chitral also have adverse effects. This is the reason that neither rains nor snow fell for long time in this season.
\nThe people of the area demand from the provincial and federal government to provide electricity to the people of Chitral at a cheap (subsidize) rate from the Golengol hydroelectric power station and also to launch the project for the gas plant here, for which government land was purchased on million of rupees.
\nA gas plant should be installed on it so that the people here use gas or electric heaters for cooking and heating purposes instead of burning firewood, so that this tourism spot can be protected from the negative effects of climate change due to indiscriminate deforestation.
\nAccording to the latest report, snowfall is continue in Chitral dimensions and the temperature has also dropped below the freezing point. Passengers and tourists are requested to get information about the road before traveling on the Lowari Tunnel Road and must use snow chains to avoid slipping while traveling on the snow bound and icy road to continue their journey safely.
