{"id":405049,"date":"2024-05-06T15:56:23","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T10:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=405049"},"modified":"2024-05-06T15:56:23","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T10:56:23","slug":"no-place-to-pray-for-muslim-workers-in-italian-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/no-place-to-pray-for-muslim-workers-in-italian-city\/","title":{"rendered":"No place to pray for Muslim workers in Italian city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Urban planning regulations tightly limit the establishment of places of worship, mayor says<br \/>\nIslam is not among the 13 religions that have official status under Italian law<\/strong><br \/>\nMONFALCONE, Italy: It\u2019s Friday prayers in the northeastern Italian city of Monfalcone, and hundreds of men are on their knees in a concrete parking lot, their heads bowed to the ground.<br \/>\nThey are just a fraction of the city\u2019s Muslims who since November have been banned from praying inside their two cultural centers by Monfalcone\u2019s far-right mayor.<br \/>\nInstead, they assemble in this privately owned construction site as they await a court decision later this month to settle a zoning issue they say has barred their constitutional right to prayer.<br \/>\nAmong them is Rejaul Haq, the property\u2019s owner, who expresses frustration over what he and many other Muslims see as harassment by the city they call home.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me where I should go? Why do I have to go outside of Monfalcone? I live here, I pay taxes here!\u201d lamented Haq, a naturalized Italian citizen who arrived from Bangladesh in 2006.<br \/>\n\u201cCatholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Jehovah\u2019s, if they all have their church \u2014 why can\u2019t we have one?\u201d<br \/>\nImmigrants make up a third of this city of 30,000 inhabitants outside Trieste, most of them Bangladeshi Muslims who began arriving in the late 1990s to build cruise-liners for ship builder Fincantieri, whose Monfalcone shipyard is Italy\u2019s largest.<br \/>\nTheir presence is immediately visible, whether the Bangladeshi men on bicycles peddling to and from work or the ethnic grocery stores on street corners.<br \/>\nFor Mayor Anna Cisint, the restriction on prayer is about zoning, not discrimination.<br \/>\nUrban planning regulations tightly limit the establishment of places of worship, and as a mayor in a secular state, she says it is not her job to provide them.<br \/>\n\u201cAs a mayor, I\u2019m not against anybody, I wouldn\u2019t even waste my time being against anybody, you see, but I\u2019m also here to enforce the law,\u201d Cisint said.<br \/>\nStill, she argues the number of Muslim immigrants, boosted by family reunifications and new births, has become \u201ctoo many for Monfalcone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThere are too many&#8230; you have to tell it like it is,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nHer warnings about the \u201csocial unsustainability\u201d of Monfalcone\u2019s Muslim population have propelled Cisint to national headlines in recent months.<br \/>\nThey have also assured her a spot in upcoming European Parliament elections for Matteo Salvini\u2019s anti-immigrant League party, part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni\u2019s coalition government.<br \/>\nThe League for decades has obstructed mosque openings in its stronghold of northern Italy. But the problem is nationwide in Catholic-majority Italy.<br \/>\nIslam is not among the 13 religions that have official status under Italian law, which complicates efforts to build places of worship.<br \/>\nThere are currently fewer than 10 officially recognized mosques, said Yahya Zanolo of the Italian Islamic Religious Community (COREIS), one of the country\u2019s main Muslim associations.<br \/>\nThat means that out of Italy\u2019s estimated more than two million Muslims, most are relegated to thousands of makeshift places of worship that \u201cfeed prejudice and fear in the non-Muslim population,\u201d said Zanolo.<br \/>\nCisint, who has been under police protection since receiving online death threats in December, complains about a resistance to integration by what she called a \u201cvery closed\u201d community.<br \/>\nShe asks why Arabic and not Italian is taught in the community centers and calls \u201cintolerable\u201d wives walking behind husbands or schoolgirls in veils.<br \/>\nIn the run-up to European elections, the League has once again seized on illegal immigration to Italy \u2014 where nearly 160,000 migrants arrived by boat last year, mostly from Muslim countries \u2014 as a vote-winner.<br \/>\nSalvini has called the June vote \u201ca referendum on the future of Europe,\u201d to decide \u201cwhether Europe will still exist or whether it will be a Sino-Islamic colony.\u201d<br \/>\nBut Monfalcone\u2019s Muslims don\u2019t fit the stereotypes exploited by the League, armed as they are with work permits or passports.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not like we came here to see the beautiful city of Monfalcone,\u201d jokes Haq. \u201cIt\u2019s because there\u2019s work here.\u201d<br \/>\nMany Muslims said they feel a palpable sense of distrust, if not outright hatred, from some of the long-time residents.<br \/>\nAhmed Raju, 38, who works at Fincantieri installing panels, has mostly prayed at home since the cultural centers have been off-limits.<br \/>\nSuch is the reach of the mayor\u2019s rhetoric that \u201ceven I get scared\u201d about Muslims, Raju said.<br \/>\nOf the prejudice the community faces, Raju added: \u201cYou feel like you\u2019re in front of a big wall, that you can\u2019t break down.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re foreigners. We can\u2019t change the situation.\u201d<br \/>\nOutside a classroom where volunteers teach Italian to recently immigrated women, Sharmin Islam, 32, said the animosity is acutely felt by her young son who was born in Italy.<br \/>\n\u201cHe comes back from school and asks, \u2018Mum, are we Muslims bad?\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nAn administrative court in Trieste will rule on May 23 whether to uphold or strike down the mayor\u2019s ban on prayer within the cultural centers.<br \/>\nHaq says Monfalcone\u2019s Muslims have \u201cno Plan B\u201d if they lose, but worries even if they win the scars from the stand-off will remain.<br \/>\nMeanwhile Cisint has been actively promoting her book, \u201cEnough Already: Immigration, Islamization, Submission,\u201d warning Monfalcone\u2019s situation could be duplicated elsewhere.<br \/>\nOn a recent public holiday, Bangladeshis filled the city\u2019s main square, from little girls with unicorn balloons to groups of young men enjoying a day off.<br \/>\nLooking on was barman Gennaro Pomatico, 24.<br \/>\n\u201cThe locals won\u2019t ever accept them,\u201d said Pomatico.<br \/>\n\u201cBut ultimately they don\u2019t bother
