However, his remarks took a critical turn toward the NBA.<br \/>\n\u201cYou know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have \u2018world champion\u2019 on they head. World champion of what? The United States? Don\u2019t get me wrong, I love the US \u2013 at times \u2013 but that ain\u2019t the world,\u201d Lyles stated.<br \/>\nHe emphasized that track and field is a truly global sport, saying, \u201cWe are the world.<br \/>\nWe have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show they are represented. There ain\u2019t no flags in the NBA.\u201d<br \/>\nLyles\u2019 comments touched on a long-standing criticism of American sports culture, where champions in domestic leagues are often referred to as world champions, despite competing only against teams from the US and Canada. Kevin Durant, a two-time NBA champion and 2014 MVP, responded on Instagram, saying, \u201cSomebody help this brother.\u201d Four-time NBA champion Draymond Green also chimed in, writing, \u201cWhen being smart goes wrong,\u201d accompanied by a face-palm emoji.
