PESHAWAR: Speakers at a consultative workshop on Tuesday suggested various ways for formulation and implementation of effectual legislation to ensure protection of growing human rights violation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
\nThe workshop titled \u2018Formulation of Provincial Human Rights Strategy\u2019 was organized by ministry of human rights Pakistan with collaboration of Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO) here at a local hotel.
\nThe participants were divided into four groups and were asked to put up their proposals as to how improvement can bring in implementation of the laws formulated for safety of human rights in the province.
\nSpeaking on the occasion, Qamar Ali, deputy secretary judicial of home department highlighted the reforms being launched in prisons, directorate of prosecution, judiciary and police regarding protection of human rights.
\nHe told the participants that under the reform initiatives, special attention was being paid to protection of rights of prisoners including juvenile prisoners, women and their children and ailing prisoners in different jails of the province.
\nHe stressed the need for formulation of human rights related laws in the province in accordance with UN conventions ratified by Pakistan.
\nHe said the provincial home department and directorate of prosecution was jointly working with federal ministry for protection of human rights.
\nIn his presentation, senior advocate and human rights defender Hashim Raza briefed the participants on present situation of human rights in Pakistan and called for adopting strategic mechanism to ensure safety of citizens.
\nHe called upon the authorities concerned to pay heed towards the issue and find an amicable solution to provide legal cover for safety of different segments of our society including senior citizens, disabled persons, labor, workers, child labor and transgender community, adding that illegal practices of early and forced marriages were violation of human rights that should be prevented through legislation.
\nAbid Kaka Khel, Deputy Secretary Health department proposed induction of human rights related chapter in curriculum. He said that teachings of human rights should be imparted to officers of provincial management services and civil servants in order to create awareness on the issue.
\nSAP Pakistan regional head Sikandar Zaman said that coordination among police, prosecution, judiciary, media and all the stakeholders should be developed and directorate of human rights should be empowered as a full-fledged commission free from political pressure.
