\nHand-held radios used by Lebanon\u2019s armed group Hezbollah detonated late on Wednesday afternoon across the country\u2019s south and in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, injuring hundreds, a security source and a witness said.
\nAt least one of the blasts took place near a funeral organised by Hezbollah for those killed the previous day when thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country.
\nThe group said on Wednesday it had attacked Israeli artillery positions with rockets in the first strike at its arch-foe since pager blasts wounded thousands of its members in Lebanon and raised the prospect of a wider Middle East conflict.
\nThe hand-held radios were purchased by Hezbollah five months ago, around the same time that the pagers were bought, said a security source.
\nIsrael\u2019s Mossad spy agency planted explosives inside 5,000 pagers imported by Lebanese group Hezbollah months before Tuesday\u2019s detonations, a senior Lebanese security source, and another source told Reuters.
\nThe operation was an unprecedented Hezbollah security breach that saw thousands of pagers detonate across Lebanon, killing 12 people and wounding nearly 3,000 others, including the group\u2019s fighters and Iran\u2019s envoy to Beirut.
\nThe Lebanese security source said the pagers were from Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, but the company said in a statement it did not manufacture the devices. It said they were made by a company called BAC which has a licence to use its brand, but gave no more details.
\nIran-backed Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel, whose military declined to comment on the blasts.
\nHezbollah said in a statement on Wednesday that \u201cthe resistance will continue today, like any other day, its operations to support Gaza, its people, and its resistance which is a separate path from the harsh punishment that the criminal enemy (Israel) should await in response to Tuesday\u2019s massacre\u201d. The plot appears to have been many months in the making, several sources told Reuters.
\nThe senior Lebanese security source said the group had ordered 5,000 beepers from Gold Apollo, which several sources say were brought into the country earlier this year.
\nGold Apollo founder Hsu Ching-Kuang said the pagers used in the explosion were made by a company in Europe that had the right to use the firm\u2019s brand, the name of which he could not immediately confirm. The company in a statement named BAC as the firm, but Hsu declined to comment on its location.
\n\u201cThe product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it,\u201d Hsu told reporters at the company\u2019s offices in the northern Taiwanese city of New Taipei on Wednesday.
\nThe senior Lebanese security source identified a photograph of the model of the pager, an AP924, which like other pagers wirelessly receive and display text messages but cannot make telephone calls.
\nGold Apollo said in a statement that the AR-924 model was produced and sold by BAC. \u201cWe only provide brand trademark authorisation and have no involvement in the design or manufacturing of this product,\u201d the statement said.
