Anura Kumara Dissanayaka took oath at colonial-era Presidential Secretariat in Colombo after decisive election victory

\nSri Lanka\u2019s first leftist president, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, was sworn in to office Monday with a pledge to rebuild public trust in politics amid an ongoing economic crisis.
\nThe self-avowed Marxist, representing the People\u2019s Liberation Front (JVP), took his oath at the historic colonial-era Presidential Secretariat in Colombo following a decisive victory in Saturday\u2019s election.
\nDissanayaka, a once fringe political figure, gained substantial support as millions of Sri Lankans grappled with the aftermath of the unprecedented economic downturn in 2022.
\nThe bearded 55-year-old son of a labourer, was sworn in by chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya in a nationally televised ceremony attended by diplomats, lawmakers, Buddhist and other clergy and the military, AFP reported.
\n\u201cI am not a conjuror, I am not a magician, I am a common citizen,\u201d he said after taking his oath. \u201cI have strengths and limitations, things I know and things I don\u2019t… my responsibility is to be part of a collective effort to end this crisis.\u201d
\nDissanayaka succeeds outgoing president Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took office at the peak of the financial crisis following the government\u2019s first foreign debt default and months of punishing food, fuel and medicine shortages. Wickremesinghe, 75, imposed steep tax hikes and other austerity measures under the terms of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout. His policies ended the shortages and returned the economy to growth but left millions struggling to make ends meet. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned shortly before the ceremony, clearing the way for Dissanayaka to appoint his own cabinet.
\nDissanayaka\u2019s party has said he wants to have an interim administration until a fresh parliament is elected. The JVP has only three lawmakers in the 225-member legislature. He has softened some policies since his rise to popularity, saying he believes in an open economy and is not totally opposed to privatisation. He has vowed to press ahead with the IMF rescue package negotiated by his predecessor last year but modify its terms in order to deliver tax cuts.
\nDissanayaka seeks \u2018int\u2019l support\u2019
\nAddressing concerns about the JVP\u2019s historical anti-West and anti-India stance, Dissanayaka said he wanted international support to rebuild the economy.
\n\u201cWe are not a nation that should be isolated,\u201d he said, as Colombo-based diplomats watched from the balcony of the presidential office. \u201cRegardless of the power divisions in the world, we intend to work with other nations to benefit our country.\u201d
\nIndia and China \u2014 Sri Lanka\u2019s biggest neighbour and largest bilateral creditor respectively \u2014 are competing for influence in the island nation, strategically situated on global east-west sea routes.
\nPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his felicitations to the newly elected President of Sri Lanka.
\n\u201cMy sincere felicitation to Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his victory in the presidential elections of Sri Lanka,\u201d the prime minister wrote on his official X timeline.
\nHe wished the president-elect every success saying that he looked forward to working with him for further strengthening of Pakistan-Sri Lanka relations.
\nMeanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he looked forward to working closely with Dissanayaka to \u201cstrengthen our multifaceted cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region\u201d. Chinese President Xi Jinping also said he hoped to work with the new president \u201cto continue our traditional friendship (and) enhance mutual political trust\u201d.
\nLegacy of violence
\nDissanayaka\u2019s party led two rebellions in the 1970s and 1980s that left more than 80,000 people dead before renouncing violence. It had been a peripheral player in Sri Lankan politics in the decades since, winning less than 4% of the vote during the most recent parliamentary elections in 2020. But Sri Lanka\u2019s crisis proved an opportunity for Dissanayaka, who saw his popularity rise after pledging to change the island\u2019s \u201ccorrupt\u201d political culture.
\nDissanayaka was a JVP student leader during the second insurrection and has described how one of his teachers sheltered him to save him from government-backed death squads that killed party activists.
\nHe counts famous Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara among his heroes. Dissanayaka becomes the country\u2019s first president to get less than 50% of the popular vote. He was elected with just over 42%, the lowest since presidential elections began in 1988. \u201cI am fully aware of the composition and size of the mandate I received,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is my responsibility to earn the support and confidence of those who did not vote for me or place their trust in me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
