The issue of homelessness has been on the rise globally, affecting almost every part of the world. In this discussion, we aim to explore the underlying reasons behind this growing crisis and examine how the current economic system contributes to the problem of homelessness.
\nBefore 1971, homelessness was a relatively rare phenomenon across the world. The global economic system was simpler then, with the U.S. dollar tied to gold at a fixed rate of $35 per ounce. Other world currencies were pegged to the U.S. dollar based on their own reserves. This system effectively limited the amount of money that could be printed, as the U.S. and other countries could only issue currency equivalent to their gold or dollar reserves. As a result, inflation remained under control, as there was a direct relationship between the money supply and real reserves.
\nIn 1971, President Richard Nixon removed the gold standard, making the U.S. dollar a free-floating fiat currency. This allowed the U.S. to print money as needed, and other countries followed suit, also increasing their money supply without being constrained by gold reserves. The result was an era of rapid economic growth fueled by the expansion of money supplies, which was directed toward various mega-projects and urban development across the globe.
\nAs more money entered the economy, it became necessary to manage inflation, particularly for essential goods like food and utilities. To mitigate the potential inflation in these sectors, much of the excess money was diverted into financial markets, particularly the stock and housing markets. Consequently, both stock prices and housing costs began to rise significantly, while inflation for essentials was kept in check.
\nInitially, the surge in housing market prices was seen as a positive development for investors and homeowners. However, by 2023, the steep rise in housing prices began to create a serious problem\u2014housing affordability. The increasing costs of homeownership and rent have pushed housing out of reach for a growing number of people, contributing to a sharp rise in homelessness. Today, the housing market in many parts of the world is already overinflated, leaving little room for further growth, and creating a dilemma for policymakers.
\nA critical question arises: why don\u2019t governments simply stop printing more money to avoid further inflation? The answer lies in the structure of the global economic system. Countries are reluctant to reduce their money supply because doing so would lower their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is a key indicator of economic health in the current system. Without continued economic growth, unemployment rises, inflation increases, and the system risks collapse.
\nGovernments have attempted to create alternative markets, such as the cryptocurrency and bond markets, to absorb excess money. However, these markets are also becoming overinflated, leaving policymakers scrambling for solutions. Redirecting more money into the housing market would exacerbate the homelessness crisis, while diverting it into essential goods like food could lead to severe inflation in those sectors, further widening the gap between the wealthy and the poor.
\nIn conclusion, the current economic system faces a critical juncture. If governments continue printing more money and channeling it into the housing market, homelessness will skyrocket, and social instability could follow. On the other hand, if excess money is directed toward food and other essentials, inflation in these areas will push necessities out of reach for the most vulnerable, even in developed nations. Stopping money printing altogether risks reducing GDP, increasing unemployment, and leading to systemic collapse.
\nThe economic system that began in 1971 has now reached a critical age of 53 years, and its flaws are becoming increasingly apparent. It is evident that the world needs a new economic framework to address these challenges effectively.
