{"id":448903,"date":"2024-12-12T15:31:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T10:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=448903"},"modified":"2024-12-12T15:31:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T10:31:05","slug":"un-condemns-suicide-attack-on-afghan-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/un-condemns-suicide-attack-on-afghan-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"UN condemns suicide attack on Afghan minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban\u2019s two-decade insurgency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>KABUL: The United Nations mission in Afghanistan on Thursday condemned an attack claimed by the Daesh group that killed the refugees minister and several others.<br \/>\nThe Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a suicide bombing at the ministry\u2019s offices in the capital Kabul.<\/p>\n<p>Tight security measures were in place Thursday for Haqqani\u2019s funeral.<br \/>\nCabinet member Khalil Haqqani was the most high-profile casualty of an assault in the country since the Taliban seized power three years ago.<br \/>\n\u201cThere can be no place for terrorism in the quest for stability,\u201d the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on X, offering condolences to the victims\u2019 families.<br \/>\nThe European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also condemned the attack, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran.<br \/>\nHaqqani \u2014 who is on US and UN sanctions lists and never appeared without an automatic weapon in his hand \u2014 was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban\u2019s two-decade insurgency.<br \/>\nHe was also the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the current interior minister.<br \/>\nThe Daesh group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a bomber detonated an explosive vest inside the ministry, according to a statement on its Amaq news agency, as translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.<br \/>\nTaliban authorities had already blamed Daesh for the \u201ccowardly attack\u201d \u2014 the first targeting a minister since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.<br \/>\nViolence has waned in Afghanistan since the Taliban forces took over the country in 2021, ending their war against US-led NATO coalition forces.<br \/>\nHowever, the regional chapter of Daesh, known as Islamic State Khorasan, is active in Afghanistan and has regularly targeted civilians, foreigners and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban\u2019s two-decade insurgency KABUL: The United Nations mission in Afghanistan on Thursday condemned an attack claimed by the Daesh group that killed the refugees minister and several others.
