\nKhyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Thursday said the construction of the Mohmand Dam project is underway at a cost of 5 billion.
\nSpeaking at the \u201cBreath Conference\u201d on climate change here, the KP Chief Minister emphasized that the province plays a crucial role in environmental conservation, stating, \u201cKhyber Pakhtunkhwa cleans 15% of Pakistan\u2019s carbon emissions, and provinces should be given their fair share.\u201d
\nHe further highlighted that KP is the only province actively contributing to reducing carbon emissions at a significant level. The government is committed to transforming KP into a \u201cGreen Province\u201d by shifting buildings to solar energy and investing in forestry.
\nCM Gandapur revealed that 675 million rupees have been allocated for forest conservation, and 25% of the province\u2019s land is covered with forests. He stressed the importance of climate change action.
\n\u201cWe have created 175,000 jobs through afforestation initiatives, and we are making KP a Green Province by transitioning buildings to solar power,\u201d he said.
\nRegarding infrastructure projects, he announced the Rs 5 billion Mohmand Dam project and shared that the provincial government has already completed four major projects. Additionally, 175,000 olive trees have been planted, and the BRT system has reduced carbon emissions by 178%.
\nThe KP Chief Minister reaffirmed his commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection, calling on authorities to recognize the province\u2019s contributions to carbon reduction.
\nKP to send jirga to Kabul after taking Centre on board: CM Gandapur
\nKhyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur announced on Thursday that a Jirga would be sent to Afghanistan, after taking the federal government into confidence, to address the increasing incidents of terrorism in the province.
\nCM Gandapur said KP was affected by Afghanistan, a country that had been a victim of wars for decades. KP and Afghanistan share a border of more than 2,600 kilometres long.
\nWith authorities in Kabul are reluctant to take decisive action against terrorists\u2019 sanctuaries, militants from across the border have repeatedly targeted Pakistan\u2019s security forces and innocent civilians.
\nRecently, the son of the deputy governor of Afghanistan\u2019s Badghis province was among four terrorists killed in KP, Radio Pakistan reported.
\nCM Gandapur said today that they would form a Jirga, comprising representatives of different tribes, to hold talks with the interim government in Kabul.
\nMeanwhile, Adviser to KP Chief Minister on Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said: \u201cPeace in Afghanistan and Pakistan is interlinked.\u201d
\nBarrister Saif said they wanted peace and brotherly relations between the two countries. Both countries enjoy economic, political, and cultural relations, he said, adding that they want to increase the business ties between the two sides.
\nSources privy to the matter said the Afghan authorities had contacted the provincial government in this regard, adding that a grand Jirga would be held after initial talks between the two sides.
\nLast month, the KP CM announced that he would send a delegation of tribal elders to Afghanistan for talks, saying: \u201cThe federal government has not achieved any success in talks with Afghanistan.\u201d
\n\u201cWe will find a solution to the problems,\u201d he had added.
\n\u201cI hope they [the Afghan side] will cooperate with our Jirga,\u201d said the KP CM.
\nEarlier this week, the military\u2019s top brass expressed grave concern over the continued use of Afghan soil against Pakistan by terrorists and demanded \u201cconcrete and tangible actions\u201d by the interim Afghan government.
\nThe concern was expressed during the 267th Corps Commanders\u2019 Conference at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
\n\u201cThe forum stressed the imperative of concrete and tangible actions by interim Afghan government against Fitna Al Khawarij instead of denials as well as continuing with the strategy of undertaking all necessary measures in defence of Pakistan and its people,\u201d the military\u2019s media wing said.
\nThe year 2024 turned out to be the deadliest for Pakistan\u2019s civil and military security forces in a decade with at least 685 fatalities and 444 terror attacks, according to \u201cCRSS Annual Security Report 2024\u201d issued by Centre for Security and Strategic Studies.
\nEqually alarming were the cumulative losses of civilians and security personnel, i.e., 1,612 fatalities, accounting for over 63pc of the total recorded this year, marking 73pc more losses compared to 934 outlaws eliminated, The News reported citing CRSS report.
\nThe overall fatalities recorded the previous year were a record 9-year high and over 66% more than in 2023. On average, nearly seven lives were lost daily, with November emerging as the deadliest month across all metrics, compared to all other months of the year.
\nThe violence took the heaviest toll on KP which topped in human losses with 1,616 fatalities, followed by Balochistan with 782 fatalities. In 2024, the country suffered 2,546 violence-linked fatalities and 2,267 injuries among civilians, security personnel and outlaws.
