\u201cLong-term settlement\u201d of Ukraine conflict possible, says Putin while inviting US president to Moscow
\n WASHINGTON
\nUS President Donald Trump said he had a \u201clengthy and highly productive\u201d call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in which they agreed to \u201cimmediately\u201d start negotiations to end the Ukraine war.
\nTrump said on Truth Social that both leaders had extended invitations of \u201cvisiting each other\u2019s nations,\u201d while the US leader said he would be calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky \u201cright now\u201d to inform him about the call.
\nIn an extraordinary thaw in relations between Washington and Moscow, the Kremlin separately said the call lasted one and a half hours and that Putin and Trump had agreed that the \u201ctime has come to work together.\u201d
\nPutin also told Trump that a \u201clong-term settlement\u201d of the Ukraine conflict sparked by Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of its pro-Western neighbor was possible, and invited the US president to Moscow, the Kremlin said.
\nThe Trump-Putin call came after a prisoner swap this week that saw Moscow free US teacher Marc Fogel while Washington released Russian cryptocurrency kingpin Alexander Vinnik.
\nTrump heaped praise on the Russian president in his Truth Social post, saying that Putin \u201ceven used my very strong Campaign motto of, \u2018COMMON SENSE.\u2019\u201d
\nHe said they \u201cboth agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia\/Ukraine\u201d \u2014 with Trump using an unconfirmed figure for the toll in the war.
\n\u201cWe agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other\u2019s Nations,\u201d said Trump.
\n\u201cWe have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelensky, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now.\u201d
\nTrump said he had asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Adviser Michael Waltz and his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff \u201cto lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
