\nOn the eve of England\u2019s dead-rubber Champions Trophy clash against South Africa, Jos Buttler\u2019s resignation as white-ball captain dominated headlines on Friday, marking a poignant end to a turbulent two-year reign.
\nThe match, set for Satu\u00adrday at Karachi\u2019s National Bank Stadium, now carries the weight of an era\u2019s closure for England, while South Africa eye a top-of-the-group finish to secure a smoother semi-final path.
\n\u201cI\u2019m gonna stand down as England captain. It\u2019s the right call for me, it\u2019s the right call for the team,\u201d Buttler said during a somber press conference.
\n\u201cThis tournament was going to be an important result-wise for my captaincy and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament, and with a bit of a hangover from some tournaments before, I just probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame. \nSaturday\u2019s game will be Buttler\u2019s last game as Eng\u00adland captain and McCul\u00adlum \u2014 who was accompanying Buttler in the press conference \u2014 said that his team-mates will hopefully put on a good show.
\n\u201cI feel incredibly sad for Jos [Buttler],\u201d McCullum said. \u201cWe\u2019ve all seen over the last couple years how much he\u2019s invested in captaining his country and trying to get the very best out of those guys around him.\u201d
\nMcCullum added that Buttler is a very capable leader who has done a significant job with the available players.
\n\u201cPeople forget that he won a World Cup only a couple of years ago and that can never be taken away from him,\u201d he said \u201cHe\u2019s done a significant job often without the best players available and often around different structures as well.\u201d
\nThe former New Zea\u00adland captain McCullum insisted that Buttler will remain an important pla\u00ady\u00ader for the side in future.
