{"id":467644,"date":"2025-03-18T04:15:06","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T23:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=467644"},"modified":"2025-03-18T04:15:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T23:15:06","slug":"malaysian-rice-porridge-a-trademark-ramadan-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/malaysian-rice-porridge-a-trademark-ramadan-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian rice porridge a \u2018trademark\u2019 Ramadan tradition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned Kuala Lumpur mosque serves a unique version of porridge using recipe originating from India<br \/>\n Kuala Lampur<br \/>\nAs dusk fell, hundreds of Muslims at a mosque in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur feast on bowls of fragrant rice porridge known locally as \u201cbubur lambuk\u201d, part of a Ramadan tradition dating back decades.<br \/>\nSlow-cooked with various spices in giant pots and stirred with oversized ladles, bubur lambuk is traditionally prepared by volunteers in mosque courtyards before being distributed to the public for iftar, the fast-breaking meal in the largely Islamic nation.<br \/>\nBut the broth, specially prepared at Masjid India, a well-known Kuala Lumpur mosque, serves a unique version of the porridge using a recipe originating from India. The recipe is known as Nombu Kanji, according to the mosque\u2019s imam, Muhammad Nasrul Haq Abdul Latif.<br \/>\n\u201cThis tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, from the 60s to the 70,\u201d he told AFP.<br \/>\n\u201cSo it has become a trademark. If it (Nombu Kanji) wasn\u2019t there, it wouldn\u2019t be complete.\u201d Mosque volunteers use 140 kilogrammes of rice daily to cook the porridge, which is served in bowls to prayer attendees or packed into 1,000 large plastic packets to be distributed to the public.<br \/>\nEach packet is enough to feed a family of four.<br \/>\n\u201cFrom the perspective of making things easier for the people in this area, sometimes the homeless who struggle to get food, low-income workers, and office workers who sometimes don\u2019t have time to go home and cook benefit from this,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cSo, the preparation of iftar meals by mosques helps make their daily lives more convenient (during Ramadan).\u201d<br \/>\nMohaiyadin Sahulhameed, a local resident originally from India, said the porridge served at the mosque reminded him of home.<br \/>\n\u201cBack in our village, the way we cook is using large woks, with curry leaves, mustard seeds, cinnamon, and all sorts of ingredients mixed together. When combined with rice, it creates a rich aroma, quite similar to how it\u2019s done here,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe mosque\u2019s cook, Sathakkathullah Hameed, said he saw preparing the large pots of porridge daily as a religious calling.<br \/>\n\u201cDuring this fasting month, I want to help others.
