\nThe United States embassy in Qatar advised American citizens to \u201cshelter in place\u201d on Monday, following Tehran\u2019s threats to retaliate for US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Several other Western embassies echoed the warning.
\nQatar, a gas-rich Gulf nation located about 190 kilometres (120 miles) south of Iran, hosts the US military\u2019s largest base in the region \u2014 Al Udeid Air Base.
\n\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, we recommend American citizens shelter in place until further notice,\u201d the US embassy stated on its website.
\nBritain and Canada later cited the US alert in their own advisories to nationals.
\nIran\u2019s armed forces warned on Monday of \u201cserious, unpredictable consequences\u201d for the United States in response to the airstrikes on three nuclear sites.
\nIn neighbouring Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy\u2019s Fifth Fleet, the American embassy said it had \u201ctemporarily shifted a portion of its employees to local telework.\u201d Bahraini authorities had earlier directed most government workers to work from home, citing \u201cregional circumstances.\u201d
\nResponding to the embassy warnings, Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said that such advisories \u201cdo not necessarily reflect the existence of specific or credible threats.\u201d
\n\u201cWe would like to reassure the public that the security situation in the state remains stable,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cQatar continues to exert intensive diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.\u201d
\nSeparately, on Sunday, the US State Department advised Americans worldwide to \u201cexercise increased caution\u201d due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
