Pakistan\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, flew into New York Sunday evening to attend high-level events of the UN Security Council (UNSC). He will later visit Washington for some key engagements.<\/p>\n
DPM\/FM Dar was received at New York\u2019s John F. Kennedy international airport by Pakistan\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, and officials of the Pakistan Mission to the UN and the Consulate General.<\/p>\n
Pakistan currently holds UNSC\u2019s presidency, marking the country\u2019s eighth term on the 15-member body. The country began its current two-year term as a non-permanent member in January 2025 and will serve through the end of 2026.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Dar is set to address the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) which is currently underway. This forum, convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is a crucial event for reviewing progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n
Later, he is expected to meet the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, as part of Pakistan\u2019s Security Council signature events, the DPM\/FM will chair a high-level Open Debate on \u201cPromoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes\u201d.<\/p>\n
Diplomats said the debate aims at exploring ways to strengthen multilateralism, and at enhancing diplomacy and mediation for peaceful settlement of disputes.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the DPM\/FM will preside over the Quarterly Open Debate of the Security Council on the \u201cSituation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question\u201d.<\/p>\n
The next day, the DPM\/FM will also chair a high-level briefing of the UN Security Council that will focus on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The meeting is being held as part of Pakistan\u2019s efforts to strengthen collaboration between the OIC and the UN for maintenance of international peace and security.<\/p>\n
To express Pakistan\u2019s strong commitment, and unwavering support for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, the DPM\/FM will also attend the high-level Conference on the \u201cPeaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the implementation of Two-State Solution\u201d which will now take place on July 28-29.<\/p>\n
The conference, sponsored y France and Saudi Arabia, was originally planned for June but was postponed due to the Iran-Israel war.<\/p>\n
During his stay in New York, the DPM\/FM is expected to also have several bilateral engagements with his counterparts, as well as senior UN officials.<\/p>\n
