\nThe Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has approved comprehensive amendments to its Rules of Business for the first time in 37 years, aiming to modernize parliamentary procedures and make the legislative process more transparent, inclusive, and digitally aligned.
\nA special ratification ceremony was held at the KP Assembly to mark the approval of the new Rules of Business. The event was presided over by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati and attended by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Chief Minister Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur, Opposition Leader Dr. Ibadullah, Deputy Speaker Suraya Bibi, former speakers, lawmakers, and senior officials.
\nBabar Saleem Swati said that the revised rules, updated after over three decades, aim to streamline legislative functions in line with the demands of the digital age. The amendments introduce provisions for public participation, enabling citizens to submit suggestions or objections on proposed laws, he added.
\nAdditionally, he said that live coverage, digital records, and fixed timelines for parliamentary business,including bills, motions, and questions, have been introduced.
\nFor the first time, as per the new rules, the proceedings of the House will be open to students and the general public, while the inclusion of Hindko and Saraiki alongside Urdu, English, and Pashto broadens the linguistic inclusivity of the Assembly.
\nSpeaker Babar Saleem Swati termed the development a milestone in parliamentary history, crediting bipartisan efforts and technical support from government departments. He said that 43 members and staff worked tirelessly for nine months to finalize the amendments, which are aimed at aligning the Assembly with democratic values and public expectations.
\n\u201cParliament is the institution that holds governments accountable. With these reforms, we are not just making procedural changes but are strengthening democracy in real terms,\u201d he stated.
\nDeputy Speaker Suraya Bibi said the rules have been simplified and modernized, incorporating new chapters on the election of key parliamentary figures, women\u2019s caucus, virtual attendance, and the formation of advisory councils.
\nOpposition Leader Dr. Ibadullah also welcomed the reforms, calling it a historic day for the KP Assembly.
