\nNepal\u2019s former chief justice Sushila Karki is the leading choice to be interim leader, a representative of the \u201cGen Z\u201d protesters said Thursday, after demonstrations that ousted the veteran prime minister.
\nArmy chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel held \u201cconsultations with related stakeholders and held a meeting with representatives of Gen Z\u201d on Wednesday, a military spokesperson said, referring to the loose umbrella title of the protest movement, without giving further details.
\nThe army is seeking to restore order in the Himalayan nation of 30 million people, after the worst violence in two decades ousted the prime minister and left the parliament ablaze on Tuesday.
\n\u201cRight now, Sushila Karki\u2019s name is coming up to lead the interim government \u2014 we are now waiting for the president to make a move,\u201d said Rakshya Bam, who was among those attending the meeting.
\n\u201cWe discussed with the army chief about the future,\u201d she told AFP.
\n\u201cThe conversation was about how we can move forward, keeping the peace and security of the country.\u201d
\nKarki, 73, an academic and Nepal\u2019s first female Supreme Court chief justice, has told AFP that \u201cexperts need to come together to figure out the way forward\u201d, and that \u201cthe parliament still stands\u201d.
\nBut others warned the choice of the protesters \u2014 who are not one single party \u2014 was far from unanimous.
\nIn a virtual meeting attended by thousands on the online social platform Discord, young people discussed their varied agendas \u2014 and debated who should represent them.
\nThere were conflicting arguments and several names proposed.
\n\u201cThere are divisions,\u201d journalist Pranaya Rana said. \u201cIt is natural in a decentralised movement like this that there are going to be competing interests and competing voices.\u201d
\nSoldiers patrolled the streets of the capital for a second day on Thursday, which appeared to be quiet, with multiple army checkpoints set up along the streets.
\nDemonstrations began on Monday in Kathmandu against the government\u2019s ban on social media and over corruption.
