\nThe South Asia Journalists Federation (SAJF) strongly condemns the recent spate of attacks on media institutions and journalists in Nepal amidst the ongoing civil unrest.
\nThese incidents, which include intimidation, physical assaults, arbitrary detentions, and obstruction of professional duties, are a direct assault on press freedom and the right of people to be informed.
\nSAJF President Geetartha Pathak said: \u201cThe safety and dignity of journalists must be guaranteed under all circumstances.
\nViolence and intimidation against media persons not only undermine democracy but also silence the voices of citizens who rely on free media for truth and accountability. We stand firmly with our colleagues in Nepal and call upon the government to act decisively to protect them.\u201d
\nSAJF Secretary General Shakeel Ahmad added: \u201cThe authorities in Nepal must ensure that those responsible for targeting journalists are held accountable without delay.
\nThe culture of impunity for crimes against media workers cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. Journalists must be allowed to report freely and fearlessly, especially in times of political and social unrest.\u201d
\nThe SAJF calls on the Government of Nepal to:
\n1. Conduct transparent and time-bound investigations into all cases of violence, intimidation, or harassment of journalists.
\n2. Guarantee unhindered access and protection for media workers to carry out their professional responsibilities.
\n3. Ensure accountability and end impunity for attacks on press freedom.
\nAt the same time, the SAJF appeals to the media community in Nepal to uphold the highest standards of professional integrity.
\nJournalists and media houses must disseminate only verified and fact-checked information and actively combat misinformation and disinformation, which often serve vested interests and political agendas during times of crisis. Responsible journalism is critical in restoring public trust and ensuring that truth prevails over propaganda.
\nThe Federation also appeals to civil society, political leaders, and law enforcement agencies in Nepal to respect the rights of journalists and uphold media freedom as an essential pillar of democracy.
