\nThe Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) has strongly condemned the recent police violence against journalists in Islamabad, including the attack on the National Press Club, calling it an assault on press freedom and democratic values.
\nIn a joint statement, KhUJ President Kashifuddin Syed, General Secretary Irshad Ali, and other union leaders said the attack on journalists was not just physical violence, but an attack on the freedom of expression, which was a fundamental right in any democracy.
\n\u201cJournalists are fulfilling their professional duties in the interest of the country and the public,\u201d the statement read. \u201cViolence against them is intolerable and condemnable. Stopping journalists from covering events is a direct violation of democratic norms and the Constitution.\u201d
\nThe journalist community has expressed concern that while the federal government claims to be a guardian of press freedom, journalists are increasingly being harassed, obstructed, and threatened often by the very institutions meant to protect citizens\u2019 rights.
\nThe union demanded immediate action from the federal government against the police officers and officials responsible for the violence.
\nThey also called for guarantees that such incidents would not happen again.
