\nFarmers should focus on precautionary measures rather than panic in view of the spread of lumpy skin disease among cattle, livestock expert Dr Arshad Latif Arshad said on Thursday.
\nHe explained that the disease manifested as lumps and swelling on the animal\u2019s skin, which could weaken them and reduce milk production. However, with timely treatment and preventive care, most animals recovered.
\nDr Arshad said the infection could spread from one animal to another through mosquitoes, flies and other insects. Farmers were therefore advised to keep cattle sheds clean, shield their animals from insects, and immediately isolate any infected livestock to avoid transmission. They should also consult local veterinary doctors for treatment.
\nHe emphasised that although lumpy skin disease was dangerous for cattle, it did not spread to humans. \u201cFarmers need not be alarmed, but must ensure cleanliness and preventive measures,\u201d he stressed.
