During that campaign, thousands of alleged narcotics peddlers and users were killed. Duterte and his lawyers maintain his arrest was unlawful.<br \/>\nIn their notice of appeal, Duterte\u2019s lawyers asked the court to reverse a lower panel\u2019s decision to continue the case and find there is no legal basis for it.<br \/>\nThey also want the court to order Duterte\u2019s immediate and unconditional release. The defense team has also filed another motion to stop the Duterte case because they said the 80-year-old is unfit to stand trial due to a cognitive decline.
