\nA blast at a supermarket in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora has killed at least 23 people, including children, and wounded at least 11, according to local officials.
\nThe blast happened on Saturday at the Waldo\u2019s store in the city of Hermosillo.
\nThe prosecutor\u2019s office in Sonora said that \u201cthe working assumption is that the incident was accidental, and the investigation is looking into a transformer located inside the store\u201d.
\nLocal public security authorities earlier said they had ruled out an \u201cattack\u201d or \u201cevent related to a violent act\u201d against civilians.
\nSonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video message that \u201ca number of the victims\u201d were minors and that survivors were being treated at hospitals in Hermosillo.
\n\u201cI have ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and figure out those responsible,\u201d Durazo said.
\n\u201cNobody will face this pain alone. From the very first moments, emergency, security and health services responded with great professionalism and commitment, controlling the situation and saving lives,\u201d the governor said.
\nMexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences on X \u201cto the families and loved ones of those who died\u201d.
\n\u201cI have been in contact with the Sonora governor, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support where needed. I\u2019ve instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured,\u201d she said.
\nImages in local media showed the front of the supermarket charred by the fire, with the windows blown out.
\nNewspaper El Universal reported that the explosion occurred about 2pm (20:00 GMT) and that nearby businesses closed their doors to prevent the fire from spreading.
