\nThe previous tenure, led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, was defined by its singular focus on generating political disruption to weaken the federal government. Unsurprisingly, AJK also became a centre of agitation, with protests encouraged by the opposition. With a member of the ruling coalition now at the helm, there is renewed optimism for better coordination with the Centre and more efficient implementation of development initiatives.
\nAJK remains a region unlike any other in Pakistan. It forms part of the wider Jammu and Kashmir region, portions of which remain under Indian occupation under international law and which has awaited reunification with its historic lands for decades. This unresolved status has shaped the political climate in AJK. It cannot be granted full provincial status, as doing so would give India justification to formally integrate the Kashmir Valley and Jammu into its own political framework. Neither can it be denied representation and political as self determination is the bedrock of Pakistan\u2019s Kashmiri stance
\nGovernance in AJK therefore demands political sensitivity and a keen understanding of the geopolitical forces surrounding the Kashmir dispute.
