\nThe President-elect of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Dr Sher Shah Syed has raised alarm over the rising number of unnecessary caesarean sections in Pakistan, saying that 20,000 women die due to pregnancy-related complications each year.
\nSpeaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC), he said women in labor, particularly in Zone III government hospitals and private institutions, are often subjected to caesarean sections without medical justification.
\nHe described this practice as a violation of women\u2019s fundamental rights, noting that unnecessary surgery can lead to infections, excessive bleeding, wound deterioration, complications in future pregnancies, and other health risks.
\nDr Sher Shah Syed highlighted that the World Health Organization recommends a cesarean rate of no more than 15 per cent, but in Pakistan, some hospitals report rates as high as 50pc to 70pc, a sign of serious concern.
\nHe added that in private hospitals, LSCS has become a profitable procedure, sometimes performed unnecessarily for higher fees.
\nHe urged doctors to base cesarean decisions strictly on medical necessity and called on the government to implement practical measures to curb this illegal practice.
\n\u201cResearch shows that normal delivery is safer for both mother and child,\u201d he said, emphasizing benefits such as quicker maternal recovery, better newborn breathing, stronger mother-child bonding, and reduced complications in future pregnancies.
\nDr Sher Shah Syed also appealed to the public to understand the importance of normal delivery and to request cesarean sections only when medically required.
\nHe recommended that all hospitals review their LSCS policies, implement clear protocols, and train medical staff according to WHO guidelines to reduce the high cesarean rate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
