\nA prisoner convicted of drug trafficking and held in a French high-security jail was granted a day\u2019s release to meet a potential employer, sparking controversy. Several vehicles departed from a supermax facility in the northern town of Vendin-le-Vieil early Monday morning, according to a media journalist on the scene.
\nThe justice ministry said late on Tuesday the prisoner \u201creturned safely, went through registration and was returned to his cell\u201d, adding that it did not have any reports of incidents during his release.\u201dHe respected the time limit of his leave permit\u201ddictating that he had to be back in prison by 9:00 pm (2000 GMT), it said.
\nEarlier, David Lacroix, who represents the FO Justice union, told media the prisoner was expected to travel unescorted by train to the city of Lyon for a meeting with a prospective employer. Identified as Ouaihid Ben Faiza by a union source speaking on condition of anonymity, the inmate is considered a key figure in a major drug-trafficking network in the Parisian suburbs and is due for release in 2029.
\n\u201cHe is not being monitored, he is not being escorted. Someone from his entourage came to pick him up,\u201d Ben Faiza\u2019s lawyer, Marie Violleau, told broadcaster BFMTV. \u201cHe is going from point A to point B to prepare, strengthen and reinforce his reintegration,\u201d she added. Ben Faiza already escaped custody during a hospital visit in 2014, remaining at large for two weeks after fleeing with the help of an armed commando.
\nThe decision to grant the prisoner leave \u2014 against the public prosecutor\u2019s advice \u2014 has fuelled outrage. The move came days after the killing of an anti-drug activist\u2019s brother in the southern city of Marseille reignited calls to tackle drug crime in France. Such a release is \u201cincompatible with the conditions of isolation\u201d, said Thomas Vaugrand, a representative of Ufap Unsa Justice union. \u201cWe said we had to cut them off from the world,\u201d he added, \u201cand now we\u2019re letting them out into the wild, all alone\u201d.
\nIn July, France began moving some of its most notorious drug traffickers to the Vendin-le-Vieil prison, as part of the country\u2019s fight against the narcotics trade. One of France\u2019s two most secure prisons has been renovated to further boost security, including the paving in concrete of the exercise yard to prevent objects from being hidden and the installation of an airport-style body scanner.
