\nPresident Donald Trump said in an interview published Thursday that his authority as commander-in-chief is constrained only by his \u201cown morality,\u201d dismissing international law and other external checks on the use of U.S. military, economic, and political power. \u201cYeah, there is one thing. My own morality.
\nMy own mind. It\u2019s the only thing that can stop me,\u201d Trump told The New York Times Wednesday night when asked if there were any limits on his international power.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t need international law,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not looking to hurt people.\u201d When pressed on whether his administration is required to abide by international law, Trump said, \u201cI do,\u201d but added, \u201cIt depends what your definition of international law is.\u201d
\nTrump, who spoke to the newspaper as his administration looks into \u201ca range of options\u201d in attempts to gain control of Greenland, also emphasized the importance of ownership.<\/p>\n
His remarks follow U.S. attacks on groups in Venezuela, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Nigeria, Iraq and Iran throughout the first year of his second term.Trump\u2019s decision to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro prompted backlash and concerns about the potential of a war ensuing.<\/p>\n
\u201cOwnership is very important,\u201d Trump said, adding, \u201cBecause that\u2019s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can\u2019t do with, you\u2019re talking about a lease or a treaty.
