Srinagar (Online): Global rights group Amnesty International has asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to stop the use of pellet guns which have claimed lives and left hundreds blinded in the ongoing protests in occupied Kashmir.
\n“Pellet guns are inherently inaccurate and indiscriminate, and have no place in law enforcement,” Zahoor Wani, Senior Campaigner, Amnesty International India said in a statement issued.
\n“Amnesty International India calls on the Jammu and Kashmir government to immediately stop the use of pellet guns in policing protests,” he added.
\n“They cannot ensure well-targeted shots and risk causing serious injury, including to bystanders or other protesters not engaging in violence. These risks are almost impossible to control.”
\nAmnesty also termed the weapon as a “less-lethal” weapon which has “deadly consequences”.
\nAuthorities have termed the pellet gun as a “non-lethal” weapon.
\n“The death of a third person in Jammu and Kashmir due to injuries caused by pellet guns is a reminder that the ‘less-lethal’ weapon can have deadly consequences.”<\/p>\n
Demos & rallies held in IOK against killing spree<\/p>\n
Srinagar (Online): In occupied Kashmir, people staged forceful demonstrations and rallies in many areas against the killing spree unleashed by Indian forces in the Kashmir Valley. Hurriyet leader, Masroor Abbas, led a protest march from Khanqah-e-Sokhta Nawa Kadal in Srinagar. Addressing the protesters, he urged the people to follow the protest programme announced by Hurriyet leadership.
\nA candle-light vigil was also held to pay tributes to the martyrs who were killed by Indian troops and police during the ongoing Kashmir Intifada. Scores of youth from Hajin town in Bandipora district held a bike rally. The protesters were waving Pakistani flags and shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
\nA candle-light protest was held in Sulkoote area of Kupwara district. Hundreds of people, including men and women, staged a massive pro-freedom rally amid slogans in favour of freedom.
\nOn the other hand, Banihal, Doda, Thathri and Kishtwar areas of Jammu region observed complete shutdown to express solidarity with the people of the Kashmir Valley.
\nBanihal town, scores of youth took out a procession against the innocent killings and use of pellet guns by Indian forces in the Valley. They chanted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
\nIn Doda, a massive protest rally was taken out in which hundreds of people participated and condemned the killing and injuring of civilian due to the firing of bullets, pallets and teargas shells by Indian forces in the Valley. They demanded that the use of pellet guns against civilians should be immediately stopped and forces\u2019 personnel who killed and wounded innocent protesters should be booked.
\nIn Kishtwar, the members of Muslim community across the District observed shutdown to lodge protest against the civilian killings. A large number of people led by the Imam of Jamia Masjid, Farooq Ahmed Kitchloo, staged a sit-in at Bus Stand against the Indian brutalities in the territory.
