\nThe Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution aimed at enhancing the legal and constitutional status of local government institutions.
\nThe resolution was moved by Pakistan People\u2019s Party (PPP) parliamentary leader in KP Assembly Ahmed Karim Kundi.
\nThe resolution highlights the constitutional obligation of provinces to establish local governments, ensuring the devolution of political, administrative, and financial powers. It also underscores that local governments are constitutionally protected across the globe.
\nThe resolution further references the Election Commission\u2019s recommendation to amend Article 140-A for the timely holding of elections.
\nIt demands clarity and reinforcement of the continuity, powers, and constitutional status of local governments through a constitutional amendment.
\nAmong the key provisions of the resolution, it called for the clarification of the term and responsibilities of local governments in the constitution.
\nAdditionally, the resolution stipulates that new elections should be held within 90 days following the completion of a local government\u2019s term or its dissolution.
\nElected local government bodies should also be required to hold their meetings within 21 days of the announcement of election results.
\nThe resolution emphasizes the need for local governments to be empowered with full political, administrative, and financial autonomy.
