SYDNEY
\nNew Zealand authorities suspended recovery efforts on Sunday for victims of a landslide that hit a busy campground on the country\u2019s North Island.
\nSix people, including two teenagers, are presumed dead after heavy rains triggered Thursday\u2019s landslide at Mount Maunganui on the island\u2019s east coast, bringing down soil and rubble at the site in \u200cthe city \u200cof Tauranga, crowded \u200cwith families on \u200csummer holidays.
\nAuthorities have been working to identify the victims after human remains were found at the site on Saturday.
\nBut a crack found at the site prompted recovery work to cease for the day \u2060on Sunday, said police Superintendent Tim Anderson.
\n\u201cAs a result \u200cof that, we\u2019ve had \u200dto pull \u200dall our staff out,\u201d Anderson told reporters \u200dat Mount Maunganui, adding, \u201cWe\u2019ve had to do that for the safety of everyone concerned.\u201d
\nHe did not specify when work would resume, saying the authorities were taking it \u201cday by day at the moment.\u201d
\nPrime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Saturday it was \u201cdevastating to receive the news we have all been dreading,\u201d after the rescue operation shifted to recovery.
\n\u201cTo the families who have lost loved ones \u2014 every New Zealander is grieving with you,\u201d Luxon posted on X.
