\nThe Provincial Minister for Health Khaliq-ur-Rehman on Friday chaired a high-level meeting with all Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Hospital Directors at the Health Department, focusing on enhancing service delivery and operational efficiency across the province. The meeting was also attended by Secretary Health, Mr. Shahid Ullah Khan, and senior health officials, a handout said.
\nDuring the session, hospital directors provided detailed briefings on the performance and operational status of each MTI.
\nThe forum discussed human resource strength, availability of medical equipment and essential medicines, bed capacity, particularly in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), and administrative and management challenges.
\nThe Health Minister was briefed on the rising influx of patients at tertiary care hospitals. He stressed the urgent need to strengthen primary and secondary healthcare facilities to reduce unnecessary referrals to tertiary hospitals and ensure optimal use of healthcare resources.
\nAddressing the participants, Mr. Khaliq-ur-Rehman underscored the importance of gradually moving MTIs towards a sustainable financial and operational model. \u201cThis approach will help share the economic burden with the provincial government while ensuring continuity and quality of healthcare services,\u201d he said.
\nThe Minister directed hospital directors to maintain uninterrupted availability of essential medicines, strictly adhering to the MCC-approved list, and to uphold quality standards across all MTIs.
\nThe meeting also reviewed the performance of MTIs under the Sehat Sahulat Programme, through which millions of patients have received free and quality healthcare services. The Health Minister lauded the institutions\u2019 efforts and highlighted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa\u2019s leading role among provinces in implementing universal health coverage initiatives.
\nProvincial minister assured hospital directors of full support from the Health Department and announced a provincial plan to increase ICU capacity in line with current healthcare needs. He also emphasized stronger coordination among MTIs, noting that a centralized mechanism is being developed to introduce uniform policies, standard operating procedures, and improved governance.
\nTo further enhance transparency and accountability, the Minister informed the meeting that a third-party audit of all MTIs is underway to improve institutional performance, financial discipline, and public confidence in the healthcare system.
