\nThe UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on Tuesday called for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, with Russia voting against and the US abstaining. The resolution passed by a vote of 107 in favour to 12 against, with 51 abstentions, including by Pakistan.
\nSubmitted by Ukraine and co-sponsored by 46 countries, the resolution highlighted the war\u2019s regional and global repercussions, expressing \u201cgrave concern\u201d about continued attacks by Russia on \u201ccivilians, civilian objects, and critical energy infrastructure,\u201d worsening the humanitarian situation.
\nIt reaffirmed the 193-member Assembly\u2019s strong commitment to Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, including territorial waters. Calling for \u201can immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire,\u201d the resolution also urged \u201cthe complete exchange of prisoners of war, release of all unlawfully detained persons, and return of civilians forcibly transferred or deported, including children, as a key confidence-building measure.\u201d
\nAccording to the sponsors, the vote was a test of global solidarity with Ukraine on the anniversary of the invasion. Meanwhile, the US proposed a \u201cmotion for division\u201d for the resolution, separating the second paragraph of the background and the second action clause from the rest of the resolution for separate votes. he motion was strongly objected to by Ukraine\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa, who called it \u201cdeeply concerning and cannot be accepted.\u201d
\nThe US Deputy Envoy to the UN, Tammy Bruce, argued that \u201cOur view is that certain language in the resolution is likely to distract from ongoing negotiations, rather than support discussion of the full range of diplomatic avenues that may pave the way to durable peace.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
