\nSpecial Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan has said that a free and independent media is essential for the survival of democracy, warning that curbing truth fosters misinformation and weakens democratic values.
\nAddressing a provincial convention on media laws, regulations and ethics at the Peshawar Press Club, jointly organised by the Khyber Union of Journalists, Peshawar Press Club and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Shafi Jan said media acts as the fourth pillar of the state and plays a vital role in democratic societies.
\nHe described journalism as a noble yet demanding profession, acknowledging the sacrifices made by journalists in the line of duty. Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, he said it guarantees freedom of expression, but regretted that certain laws have been used to restrict media independence.
\nCriticising the federal government, he alleged that journalists have been sidelined for speaking the truth, adding that raising issues related to public welfare and use of taxpayers\u2019 money often results in undue pressure, particularly in the federation and Punjab.
\nIn contrast, he claimed that KP provides an enabling environment for free expression, where democratic norms are upheld and political victimisation is discouraged. He added that the opposition in the provincial assembly is given ample space to voice concerns, reflecting political tolerance.
\nThe special assistant said the provincial government responds to criticism through performance and maintains a principled stance in support of the media fraternity.
\nCommenting on media regulations, including PECA, he reaffirmed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stands with journalists and will continue to advocate for their rights.
\nReferring to recent political developments, he said a public gathering scheduled for April 9 was called off on the directions of Imran Khan, adding that the party prioritises national interest.
\nShafi Jan also raised concerns over financial matters, stating that the federal government has not released the province\u2019s due share under the NFC Award. He said only Rs550 million has been allocated under the PSDP against a commitment of Rs100 billion annually for merged districts after the FATA merger, adding that only Rs168 billion has been released over the past seven years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
